Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma recently took part in the plantation initiative ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ held at the World Forestry Arboretum in Jaipur. This event coincided with World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5. The campaign underscores the dual importance of planting and caring for trees, a sentiment echoed by Minister Jogaram Patel during the gathering.

Minister Patel Highlights Commitment to Tree Care

At the event, Minister Jogaram Patel elaborated on the objectives of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, noting its focus on both planting and nurturing trees. Patel stated, “For the last two years, we have been planting trees in Rajasthan under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign. Our Chief Minister believes that caring for a tree is just as critical as planting it.” He affirmed their commitment to environmental sustainability through this initiative, which involved planting numerous trees as a pledge on the occasion.

Patel’s remarks also underscored the state’s dedication to enhancing its green cover. The plantation drive aims to foster a culture of environmental stewardship among residents and encourage greater public participation in similar campaigns. He mentioned that today’s activities were part of a larger strategy to combat climate change and environmental degradation.

Previously, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also acknowledged World Environment Day, commending individuals and organisations involved in environmental conservation efforts across the nation. His message highlighted the importance of collective action for sustainable development.

Prime Minister Modi’s Message on Environmental Conservation

Prime Minister Modi expressed his congratulations to all participants dedicated to safeguarding the environment, emphasising the role of individuals in fostering significant changes. He remarked, “This is a day to reaffirm our commitment to protecting our environment and furthering growth that is sustainable.” His statements were a call to action for continued efforts towards environmental preservation and improvement.

The Prime Minister also pointed out key governmental achievements, including the increase of green cover and augmented wildlife populations as evidence of progress made in environmental initiatives. He asserted that these successes have stemmed from a collective belief in science and innovative solutions to pressing environmental challenges.

Modi’s remarks served to highlight the broader theme of environmental activism, encouraging citizens to support and engage in initiatives that protect the natural world. The collective efforts of the populace, he noted, have been essential in facilitating positive changes in India’s environmental landscape, reinforcing a united front against environmental issues.

Overview of World Environment Day

World Environment Day (WED) has been observed every year on June 5 since it was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 during the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. It aims to promote awareness and encourage action towards protecting the environment.

The first celebration occurred in 1973, themed “Only One Earth.” This annual event allows the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to select specific environmental themes for focus, establishing a global host country to highlight crucial environmental issues. This approach not only raises awareness but also drives international attention and cooperation on significant environmental challenges.

Each year, the themes and activities related to World Environment Day evolve, addressing urgent global environmental issues. Through campaigns like ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,’ individuals and communities are encouraged to partake in actions that contribute to a healthier planet, embodying the spirit of World Environment Day in their local contexts.
