Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused the government of compromising India’s fundamental data, food, and energy interests in a recent trade agreement. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi directed his criticism toward Prime Minister Modi, asserting that the leader has succumbed to external pressures due to the influence exerted by the United States.
During a discussion on the Budget, Gandhi drew parallels to martial arts, describing the concept of a grip and chokehold, which he used as a metaphor to illustrate Modi’s handling by the US. He characterised the interim trade deal as a betrayal of India’s national interests, a narrative that resonated throughout his speech.
Concerns Over Farmers and Economic Security
Gandhi underscored the significance of data as being the “most valuable asset” of a nation comprising 1.4 billion citizens. He emphasized the necessity for India to safeguard its energy and food resources amidst ongoing global uncertainties. In his address, he claimed that the deal presents a considerable risk to Indian farmers, potentially placing them at the mercy of mechanized agricultural practices in the United States.
The leader of the opposition also made contentious remarks regarding a convicted sex offender in the US and certain Indian businessmen, which were met with resistance from the ruling party. His comments were subsequently expunged from the official records due to their controversial nature.
Allegations and Challenges to Government Assertions
Gandhi accused Minister Hardeep Puri of facilitating connections with the convicted individual, referencing files released by the US government that list involved parties. This prompted a firm response from the treasury benches, urging him to refrain from making such allegations.
Reiterating his perspective on the trade agreement, Gandhi described it as a significant erosion of national security concerning three essential components: data, food supply, and energy resources. He asserted that in contrast to the government’s stance—that we are in a period free from conflict—current global dynamics suggest an escalation toward instability.
Geo-political Context and Future Outlook
Gandhi pointed out that while the budget acknowledges challenges related to energy and finance, it fails to provide adequate solutions for the future. He remarked on the shifting geopolitical landscape, where the dominance of the dollar is being questioned and the world appears to be moving away from a singular superpower.
The opposition leader expressed deep concerns over the implications of the trade deal, warning that it jeopardises vital sectors required for a self-sufficient and robust nation. Through his speech, he criticised the government for neglecting to address these pressing issues as part of their broader economic strategy.
