Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has launched a pointed critique of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, focusing on his recent statements that challenge traditional values in India. During an address in Raebareli, Adityanath highlighted Gandhi’s call for women to liberate themselves from, as he described, the ‘shackles of the Manusmriti,’ made while speaking in Maharashtra. This statement was framed by Adityanath as indicative of Gandhi’s failure to uphold his duty as Leader of the Opposition.

Adityanath articulated that Gandhi’s responsibilities extend beyond personal opinions, requiring accountability towards the nation’s democratic framework. He stated, “The country does not have high expectations of you merely as Rahul Gandhi; in fact, it has no expectations at all. Your role entails accountability towards the country’s democracy.”

The Chief Minister also invoked the constitutional obligations associated with Gandhi’s position, arguing that his remarks amount to a disrespect for India’s cultural heritage and traditions.

Accusations Regarding Democratic Commitments

Further addressing the issue, Adityanath accused Gandhi of undermining India’s historical and cultural values. He referenced the Congress leader’s critique of both the current government and the party’s stances on significant issues, such as those concerning Lord Ram and the historical site of Ayodhya. “You took an oath to uphold the Constitution of India, yet you seem to consider it your birthright to disparage India’s traditions and heritage,” Adityanath remarked.

Additionally, he brought up the contentious period of the Emergency in 1975, asking rhetorically about Gandhi’s commitment to democratic principles while also urging him to familiarise himself with ancient Indian texts to grasp the significance of Manu more fully.

The CM suggested that Gandhi read works such as the Atharvaveda and Matsya Purana to gain a richer understanding of the cultural discourse he engages with, emphasising the importance of informed commentary on such topics.

Critique of Statements Made Abroad

Adityanath also expressed concern over Gandhi’s comments made outside Uttar Pradesh and internationally, accusing him of misrepresenting the state and the country. “When you travel outside Uttar Pradesh, you malign and insult the state; when you go abroad, you insult India itself,” he stated, suggesting that Gandhi’s critiques have broader implications for national integrity.

Moreover, the Chief Minister alleged that Gandhi’s rhetoric could be interpreted as inadvertently supporting anti-national sentiments. He remarked on controversies involving remarks directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asserting that those involved later retracted their statements, highlighting the inconsistency in political dialogue.

In a broader context, Adityanath questioned the motives behind Gandhi’s political strategy, reiterating concerns about jeopardising the future of the nation’s youth and its heritage. “Why do you want to ruin the future of India’s current generation at the hands of Urban Naxals? Why do you want to destroy India’s heritage?” he asked rhetorically, implying that such actions could harm the country’s legacy.

Expectation from the Leader of the Opposition

Concluding his statements, Adityanath expressed disappointment at Gandhi allegedly failing to fulfil the role of a responsible Leader of the Opposition. He indicated that the expectations from Gandhi in this capacity have not been met, suggesting that he has “squandered” opportunities to contribute positively within Parliament.

Lastly, Adityanath remarked on the political significance of Amethi and Raebareli, regions traditionally associated with the Gandhi family. He accused the family of fostering an “identity crisis” within these areas, despite ongoing electoral support, thus complicating their legacy further.
