Maria Harshitha, a resident of Hyderabad, was laid off by Amazon in March and has since initiated her own chicken farm, where she now sells eggs. Despite her efforts to secure another job in product management, her search has not yielded positive results. In a detailed post on LinkedIn, she recounted the challenges she faced during her job hunt and the eventual pivot to poultry farming.

Initially, Maria was optimistic about quickly finding new employment and proactively reached out to former colleagues and family members for job referrals. However, her attempts were met with repeated rejections, leaving her to reconsider her career options.

Transitioning to Poultry Farming

As her job search continued to prove unfruitful, Maria’s husband suggested that she explore the prospect of starting her own business. This idea led the couple to experiment with raising chickens. One day, they constructed a chicken coop, purchasing six chicks to look after.

Unfortunately, these chicks turned out to be male roosters, which prompted Maria to push for acquiring hens for a reliable source of eggs. Maria wanted her children to have access to fresh, home-produced eggs as a healthier alternative to those available in stores.

This motivation inspired the family to expand their chicken coop, leading to an increase in their flock size and egg production. What began as a domestic necessity gradually evolved into a commercial venture. Maria realised she could sell the excess eggs, thus transforming her initial backyard project into a full-fledged chicken farm.

Connecting Farming with Product Management

In her post, Maria drew a connection between her new business and her prior interest in product management, referring to the eggs as her “product.” She found parallels in managing the supply and demand aspects of her growing egg sales as she had once done in her professional life.

Maria expressed gratitude for her journey and the unexpected redirection she experienced, stating, “All things happen for the good of those who believe in Christ.” Her story serves as a testament to how adversity can lead individuals to explore new paths they may not have previously considered.

Maria Harshitha now finds herself balancing the responsibilities of running a chicken farm alongside her aspirations in product management. Her experience has illustrated how setbacks can foster entrepreneurship and lead to fulfilling new opportunities.
