Demonstrators Accuse CM, Rahul Gandhi of Betrayal as Jharkhand Recruitment Protests Escalate

The CSR Journal Magazine

Protests intensified in Jharkhand on August 22, 2026, as demonstrators expressed frustration with Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s government for allegedly failing to robustly defend its decision in the High Court regarding the cancellation of multiple recruitment exams. This situation has reignited tensions, as it follows the government’s earlier actions that had quelled a lengthy 26-day protest concerning perceived irregularities in recruitment tests.

The controversy has led to a political divide, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) siding with the protesters and accusing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of behaving inconsistently with regard to student welfare. In response, the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) claimed that the BJP is manipulating the students’ plight for its political agenda.

Earlier, the JMM government had cancelled 22 job examinations and initiated inquiries into 23 other tests, a decision that initially seemed to bring calm to the situation but has now led to renewed protests by successful candidates concerned about job security.

Jharkhand High Court’s Intervention Raises Tensions

The Jharkhand High Court’s recent rulings, which temporarily halted several government notifications that annulled recruitment examinations, have aggravated the unrest among demonstrators. Members of the ‘JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch’, the group leading the protests, organised a march to the Jharkhand Public Service Commission office in Ranchi, resulting in clashes with law enforcement.

Concurrent demonstrations occurred in Hazaribag and Giridih, with protesters gathering at Albert Chowk to burn effigies of Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Rahul Gandhi. They articulated their grievances regarding “anomalies” in the job exams and the government’s lack of a vigorous court defence, which they viewed as a betrayal.

Opposition Leader Babulal Marandi condemned the government’s actions and accused it of using force against students. Former Chief Minister Champai Soren described the police’s handling of the situation in multiple cities as regrettable, claiming it infringed on the students’ democratic rights.

Political Fallout and Ongoing Investigations

The political consequences of the unfolding situation remain significant. Marandi asserted that the JMM and Congress coalition exhibited dissatisfaction even after compromising job opportunities for lower-income, Dalit, and tribal students. He accused them of attempting to undermine the students’ struggle through coercion and distraction tactics.

The JMM, however, countered this by alleging that the BJP was attempting to exploit the situation to destabilise the region’s social fabric. JMM General Secretary Vinod Pandey highlighted the party’s belief that the BJP aimed to use the issue for its own political benefits.

A member of the ‘JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch’ expressed concerns over the government’s legal strategies, alleging that senior legal representatives were absent during critical court hearings. Additionally, JLKM leader Devendra Nath Mahto announced plans for a ‘Recruitment System Reforms Yatra’, commencing August 24, and warned against a potential gherao of the Chief Minister’s residence if the government fails to adequately represent its stance in High Court by September 15.

Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is expanding its probe into the alleged recruitment exam irregularities. On the same day, it called on the public to share any relevant information related to these concerns. As of now, the Special Investigation Team has interrogated 37 individuals connected to the alleged discrepancies surrounding the 2023 JSSC Graduate Level Combined Competitive Examination. The ongoing legal battle has transformed the recruitment exam dilemma into a pressing issue that resonates both politically and publicly in Jharkhand.
