Adoor Gopalakrishnan, a notable figure in Malayalam cinema, is making a comeback to filmmaking after a ten-year break. The legendary director, who has devoted over sixty years to the art of cinema, is known for his meticulous approach and lack of haste in creating films. In a recent interview with Sandeep Unnithan, he discussed the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on his career and the factors leading to his long absence from the director’s chair.

Gopalakrishnan revealed that his last film, ‘Pinneyum’, released in 2016, coincided with the onset of the pandemic when cinema attendance drastically declined. This period of uncertainty led him to reconsider the purpose of filmmaking during such times. However, the resurgence of audiences returning to theatre prompted him to start writing a new script, culminating in his latest project, ‘Padayatra’.

In discussing the significance of returning to cinema after a decade’s gap, Gopalakrishnan elaborated on his creative process and the challenges that come with producing meaningful content. He noted that he prefers taking time to reflect on his previous works before embarking on new projects.

New Film Features Notable Collaborations

The upcoming film, ‘Padayatra’, marks a significant collaboration with renowned actor Mammootty, who has not only taken the lead role but also produced the film. Gopalakrishnan expressed enthusiasm about working with Mammootty again after a span of 32 years. The film represents their fourth collaboration, with the actor previously winning National Awards for his performances in two of Gopalakrishnan’s earlier films.

Gopalakrishnan is optimistic about the film’s reception in theatres, highlighting the lengthy process of crafting a film that resonates with audiences. He confirmed that the upcoming project is scheduled for release, although specific details on the premiere have yet to be declared.

Reflecting on the time it takes him to settle on a film project, he admitted that the selection of a subject can be protracted due to his desire for innovation and depth. Gopalakrishnan stated that cinematic creation should not become an habitual task but rather a thoughtful endeavour. He acknowledged that this latest interval had been his longest yet, with prior gaps historically ranging from four to seven years.

Gopalakrishnan’s Views on Recognition

At 87, Gopalakrishnan reflected on his lengthy career and the changes he has experienced. With a significantly reduced family circle, he attributed his sustained passion for cinema to his love for reading, which he regards as an essential part of his daily routine. He acknowledged that while he spends a substantial amount of time reading, it also contributes to his creativity.

Addressing the acclaim he receives as one of India’s greatest filmmakers, Gopalakrishnan conveyed a sense of discomfort with such labels. He questioned the validity of these distinctions and reminded us that he does not categorise his work as merely art or commercial cinema but views it simply as cinema. He aims to provide audiences with genuine storytelling devoid of unnecessary classifications.
