Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial in Bishkek during his official visit to Kyrgyzstan for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. His arrival in Bishkek took place on 30 August 2026, as he prepared for participation in the 26th SCO Leadership Summit, along with planned bilateral discussions with leaders from member nations.

Modi’s visit was at the invitation of President Sadyr Zhaparov and was marked by various ceremonial events. He was welcomed at the airport by Adylbek Kasymaliev, the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic. A traditional Kyrgyz dance was performed to honour his arrival, reflecting the local culture.

Upon reaching his hotel, Modi received a warm welcome from members of the Indian community, who chanted “Vande Mataram.” Additionally, he viewed a yoga performance accompanied by the patriotic song “Maa Tujhe Salaam” and witnessed a cultural dance inspired by Lord Shiva, showcasing India’s heritage.

Significance of the SCO Summit

This year’s SCO summit is particularly notable as it marks the 25th anniversary of the organisation’s founding. Established in 2001, the SCO originally comprised China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan joined as full members in 2017, and the membership expanded further with Iran and Belarus joining in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

In his departure statement prior to the visit, Modi expressed optimism concerning the advancement of India’s vision for the region, which is based on “security, connectivity and opportunity.” He also emphasised the importance of cooperation among SCO members to foster a region devoid of “terrorism, separatism and extremism.” The summit provides a platform for engaging on these shared priorities.

During the summit, leaders are expected to discuss various issues affecting member countries, including regional security, trade, and economic collaboration. Modi’s presence underscores India’s commitment to working constructively with fellow member states to address these critical matters.

India-Kyrgyzstan Bilateral Relations

Modi’s trip to Bishkek followed a two-day visit to Uzbekistan, where he and his Uzbek counterpart agreed to elevate their bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership. They set an ambitious target for trade to reach $5 billion annually by 2030, indicating a mutual interest in deepening economic ties.

In Kyrgyzstan, Modi’s agenda focuses not only on the SCO summit but also on bilateral discussions that aim to further strengthen the bonds between India and Kyrgyzstan. Engagements with the Indian diaspora are also an essential aspect of his visit, allowing Modi to connect with expatriates and hear their concerns.

Modi’s diplomatic efforts reflect India’s strategic approach to enhance its influence within the region and establish robust partnerships with Central Asian countries. As the summit proceeds, significant outcomes in terms of agreements and collaborations are anticipated, beneficial both for India and the wider SCO community.
