Rahul Gandhi Seeks to File Complaint Over Alleged Police Action

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, reached the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) office at the Parliament Street Police Station on August 21 to file a complaint regarding alleged police misconduct. This action stems from a protest that took place on July 20, where student demonstrators were reportedly subjected to excessive force by police, including the alleged use of pellet guns.

According to sources, prior to this meeting, Gandhi visited the Mandir Marg Police Station. He sought the registration of a case there, but was reportedly denied. Following this refusal, he escalated the matter by going directly to the DCP Central, stating he would persist in his efforts until the complaint was formally acknowledged.

As of now, Gandhi remains at the Parliament Street Police Station, actively pursuing the matter with law enforcement officials.

Allegations Against Union Home Minister

On July 25, Rahul Gandhi had vocally accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of being directly liable for the police’s actions during the protests. He claimed that Shah had authorised what he termed as the excessive use of force, including the use of lethal weapons against the students. These comments were made during a press conference where Gandhi expressed his indignation over the treatment of protesters in the national capital.

Gandhi stated, “We hold Amit Shah directly responsible for the violence that has taken place against our students. He authorised the shooting of our students. He authorised the use of lethal weapons, including pellet guns.” He emphasised the importance of addressing this issue in Parliament, calling it a fundamental concern for the future of the nation.

He further articulated that the protests were symptomatic of deeper systemic failures in the country concerning education, media, and job creation. These systemic issues, he argued, could lead to severe repercussions should the economy face challenges in the future.

Context of the Protests and Government Response

Gandhi highlighted that the cause of the student unrest stems from profound discontent with India’s current systems. He noted that students are demanding accountability from the Prime Minister as a significant component of their protest. “The deeper reason behind this protest is that India’s systems have been thoroughly undermined. They are no longer functioning effectively, and this has tangible consequences,” he stated.

In his remarks, Gandhi warned that if the government continues to overlook the concerns of the youth, it might lead to more severe situations in the future. He argued that these protests serve as a crucial alert to the central leadership and their approach towards governance.

He concluded with a call for the government to recognise the ongoing crisis within vital national systems. Gandhi insisted that the nation cannot afford to ignore the problems faced by its youth, suggesting that this is just an early indication of larger issues that may manifest if left unaddressed.
