Polling began on the morning of September 11 for the second and final phase of the local body elections in Rajasthan. Voting is currently taking place in six municipal corporations, 20 municipal councils, and 121 municipalities. In Jodhpur city alone, there are approximately 7.12 lakh registered voters eligible to cast their votes, with 729 polling booths set up to facilitate the process and 385 candidates participating in the elections.

Udaipur is also witnessing polling as councillors for the Municipal Corporation and two Municipal Councils are being elected. Local residents have generally expressed satisfaction with the arrangements made for the smooth execution of the electoral process. Reports indicate active engagement from voters across these areas.

Voter Perspectives on Municipal Inclusion

Voters have shared their thoughts on the significance of the elections, especially in areas newly integrated into municipal governance. Shashank Bagri, a resident of Chitrakoot, expressed his happiness over the area’s transition from a Panchayat Samiti to a Municipal Corporation. He articulated hopes that this change would spur development and address longstanding issues such as waste management and road conditions. Bagri’s sentiments reflect a broader anticipation among residents regarding improvements in their locality.

Another voter, Vidhi Sisodia, noted her experience as a first-time voter in these local elections. She voiced her expectations for the newly elected councillor to advocate for advancements in public services, particularly in addressing power supply issues which remain a concern for many residents. Sisodia’s candid remarks highlight the aspirations of the electorate for effective representation and infrastructure development.

As polling progresses, the voices of the electorate underscore the importance of these elections in shaping the future of local governance. Voter engagement remains a crucial aspect in determining the success of the new municipal arrangements.

Political Leaders Participate in the Electoral Process

Rajasthan Cabinet Minister Colonel Rajyavardhan Rathore participated in the voting process at the Gurukul Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School in Jaipur. Speaking with the media, Rathore projected confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would secure victories in this civic election. He characterised the ongoing development projects as evidence of effective governance, citing that both central and state funds are fully reaching the ground for public benefit.

Rathore further claimed that Jaipur is poised to become one of the most impressive cities in India within the next decade. He referred to several ongoing infrastructure initiatives, such as sewerage system upgrades and construction of new roads and drainage systems. His statements reflect the BJP’s focus on urban development and efficient service delivery as part of their campaign narrative.

Polling is scheduled from 7 am to 6 pm across 147 municipal bodies for this phase, according to State Election Commissioner Rajeshwar Singh. The total number of candidates contesting the elections stands at 18,266, with an eligible voter base of 87.60 lakh. In the first phase of elections held on September 9, voter turnout was reported at 76 per cent, and there is an aspiration for an 86 per cent turnout in this concluding phase. The counting of votes is slated for September 14, marking the culmination of the electoral process.
