The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted generally overcast skies accompanied by rain and thunderstorms across the region. The maximum temperature is expected to range between 32°C and 34°C, while the minimum temperature may hover around 27.4°C. This change comes after a prolonged dry period that had elevated temperatures in the area.

The IMD forecasts suggest that light to very light rain will occur in several locations, with one session expected to bring thunderstorms and lightning from the forenoon until afternoon. Another instance of light rain is anticipated later in the evening and at night. Furthermore, guidance from the ECMWF model indicates that rain activity may develop more significantly in the afternoon and evening.

The projected rainfall includes possibilities of moderate rain in parts of Delhi-NCR, particularly in areas such as Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad. There is also a chance of isolated thunderstorms affecting regions in Haryana and Punjab. This dual forecasting perspective allows for a broader understanding of expected weather as the IMD outlines an overall forecast while the ECMWF model provides more detailed projections.

Rising Temperatures Preceding Rain

The upcoming rain follows a notably dry stretch in Delhi, during which temperatures rose significantly. On September 10, the Safdarjung observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 36.6°C, which is 3.1°C above the seasonal average. The minimum temperature that day was noted at 27.4°C, exceeding the normal range by 1.8°C. No rainfall was recorded at the Safdarjung station in the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 am on September 11, indicating a clear lack of precipitation.

In the previous 24 hours, maximum temperatures across various locations in Delhi varied between 35°C and 37°C, with numerous stations reporting figures exceeding the average by more than 3°C. These rising temperatures have underscored the need for effective monsoon relief, making the upcoming weather changes significant for residents.

Additionally, the IMD’s predictions suggest that the new weather pattern could contribute to easing the hot conditions that have characterised much of the recent days, potentially providing respite to the citizens of Delhi-NCR.

Further Rainy Spell Expected Over the Weekend

Looking ahead, the pattern of increased precipitation is likely to continue beyond Friday. The IMD has forecast light rain across various regions on Saturday, September 12, with isolated areas potentially experiencing moderate rain under an overcast sky. Daytime temperatures are expected to drop slightly, ranging from 30°C to 32°C while the minimum temperature could decrease to somewhere between 24°C and 26°C.

Very light to light rain is predicted for September 13, 14, and 15, though the overall intensity and coverage of rain are expected to be weaker during this period. Daytime temperatures are likely to maintain a range of 30°C to 33°C, signifying a continued cooling trend following the initial rains.

In summary, Friday marks the beginning of a transition to a cloudier and wetter period for Delhi-NCR, with thunderstorms expected throughout the day and additional rain anticipated in the evening and night hours. This shift could markedly change the weather dynamics in the region after a prolonged phase of dry conditions.
