Raghav Chadha, a BJP Rajya Sabha MP, recently initiated a strong critique of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bhagwant Mann government concerning the growing drug crisis in Punjab. This announcement, made on September 11, informed the public about a planned campaign called the ‘Nasha-Mukt Punjab Yatra’, running from September 18 to September 30. The BJP’s leadership convened at their office to finalise this initiative, which aims to address the escalating drug abuse issues within the state.

The BJP’s campaign is intended to raise awareness about drug addiction, with special emphasis on its devastating effects on families and communities in Punjab. The initiative seeks not only to inform citizens about the dangers associated with drug use but also to gather public support against the prevalence of narcotics in the region. Chadha emphasised the seriousness of the situation, highlighting the urgent need for concerted action.

In a pointed remark regarding the AAP, Chadha characterised the party’s continued focus on him as indicative of their political shortcomings, likening their behaviour to that of an “ex-girlfriend.” He suggested that AAP’s fixation on him indicates a failure to move forward, implying that they remain overly concerned with his political activities.

Drug Situation in Punjab Allegedly Worsening

Chadha described the current drug crisis in Punjab as critical, specifically noting the widespread availability of ‘chitta’, a term used locally for heroin. He claimed that citizens are forming lines to purchase drugs, similar to how they queue for ration supplies, which he pointed out as a disturbing trend. Allegations made by Chadha indicated that drug transactions are occurring openly in numerous communities across Punjab, contrasting sharply with the state government’s assertions that they are managing the issue effectively.

The BJP MP raised concerns about the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of Gulzar Singh, who previously sought assistance from the Bhagwant Mann government regarding his son’s drug addiction. Singh died by suicide after reportedly facing threats, leading Chadha to question the government’s responsiveness to citizens’ crises. He posed critical inquiries about the nature of Singh’s engagement with the government and whether it could have contributed to his tragic fate.

Chadha further alleged that efforts by BJP representatives to reach out to Singh’s family were thwarted by local authorities and AAP workers. He questioned why standing in solidarity with a bereaved family seemed to be met with resistance, portraying the political environment in Punjab as one in which even acts of compassion are obstructed.

Congress Plans Protest for Justice

In response to this ongoing turmoil, Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa announced plans for a significant demonstration aimed at addressing the injustices faced by Gulzar Singh’s family. His statements indicated a commitment to ensure that the victim’s family receives justice while criticising the Punjab government for its inadequate response to the situation. Randhawa insisted that the matter should remain free from political exploitation.

He reiterated the necessity for thorough accountability concerning the government’s actions and raised concerns over the broader issue of drug availability in Punjab. With mentions of Rahul Gandhi’s previous interventions regarding the topic, Randhawa asserted that the Congress party would advocate for the community’s needs, particularly concerning the alarming accessibility of drugs throughout the state.

The escalating drug crisis in Punjab has emerged as a significant political issue, drawing scrutiny from multiple parties. As both BJP and Congress formulate plans to address the crisis, the state looks towards effective measures that can bring about positive change and support affected families.
