The national capital is preparing for the BRICS Summit with heightened security and traffic arrangements in place as the event approaches. It is scheduled to take place from September 11 to 13 at Bharat Mandapam. The preparations have become increasingly visible in recent weeks, including the installation of BRICS banners throughout New Delhi.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sachin Sharma, the police have developed comprehensive strategies to address law enforcement, security, and anti-terrorism protocols. “We are in the final stages of preparations as we anticipate the arrival of foreign delegates starting Wednesday,” Sharma stated.

In addition to security logistics, the police force is conducting numerous briefings for officers involved in the planning and execution of the event. “Our logistics have been fully assessed, and we are prepared. Surveillance and intelligence operations are ongoing,” Sharma noted.

Enhanced Surveillance and Traffic Management

The security measures include active monitoring of social media and anti-graffiti operations, as well as coordination across various security departments. The police are adopting a multifaceted approach to surveillance, with officers deployed for static checks while also patrolling the area. “We are responding dynamically to any specific information received,” explained Sharma.

Security officials have taken steps to secure venues and accommodations for delegates, reinforcing both interior and exterior protection. “All locations are being covered comprehensively, incorporating robust anti-terror measures,” he added. Rooftop surveillance has been assessed, and technical agencies are collaborating closely with police services to ensure thorough oversight.

Meanwhile, traffic management plans for the movement of foreign delegations and VVIP convoys have been structured systematically. A strong security presence will surround the Bharat Mandapam, with surveillance along critical routes connecting the airport, hotels, and the summit venue.

Comprehensive Traffic Regulations Issued

Around 7,000 personnel from various agencies, including the Delhi Police, paramilitary forces, and the National Security Guard (NSG), will ensure security during the event. Traffic flow in the vicinity will be regulated, with over 35 main roads designated for potential diversions.

Specific diversion points have been established to manage VVIP movements effectively, including strategic locations like Dhaula Kuan and Patel Chowk. Authorities anticipate deploying approximately 4,800 traffic police to facilitate the safe transit of dignitaries while minimising disruptions to other road users.

Key hotels and venues housing foreign delegates will operate under intensified security measures. Access to Bharat Mandapam will be strictly limited to authorised personnel, bolstered by biometric identification, CCTV systems, and anti-sabotage checks. The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad will remain on standby to respond to potential security threats.

Coordination with neighbouring states is also in place, with enhanced intelligence sharing and border monitoring to deter any suspicious activities. The DCP has urged citizens to remain attentive to traffic advisories and cooperate with police personnel for a seamless experience during the summit.

Schools and government offices in the region are set to close on September 11 to facilitate preparations. Meanwhile, private enterprises have been encouraged to consider remote working arrangements. The Delhi Traffic Police has advised commuters to verify their routes, allocate extra travel time, and utilise the Metro where feasible during the summit period.
