Rahul Gandhi Critiques PM Modi’s Silence on Sabarimala Issues

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi recently targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an election rally in Kannur, Kerala, highlighting what he described as Modi’s selective approach to religious topics. Gandhi specifically questioned the Prime Minister’s lack of focus on the alleged gold theft at the Sabarimala temple, a significant religious site for Hindus. He stated, “When the so-called defender of Hinduism comes to Keralam, he says nothing about Sabarimala,” pointing out that such silence raises concerns.

Allegations Against the Left Democratic Front

During his address, Gandhi accused the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) leaders of misconduct, alleging that they had stolen gold from the Sabarimala temple without facing any repercussions. He questioned the alliance between the BJP and Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, stating, “Wherever the PM goes, he talks about temples, religion and gods. But when he comes to Keralam, he does not mention the Sabarimala temple.” This assertion was aimed at showcasing the perceived inaction of state leaders in addressing reported corruption.

Allegations of BJP’s Influence in Kerala

Gandhi claimed that the BJP is providing implicit support to the LDF in Kerala, arguing that the Prime Minister effectively controls the Chief Minister. He remarked, “Narendra Modi controls the Chief Minister of Kerala,” suggesting that the CM is aware of Modi’s capability to influence legal actions against him. This observation indicates a perceived complicity between the two parties, which Gandhi believes shields the LDF from accountability.

Comparisons with Global Political Figures

In addition to criticism of Modi’s political maneuvers, Gandhi drew parallels between Modi’s relationship with Vijayan and that of former US President Donald Trump with Modi. He argued, “The way Donald Trump controls Narendra Modi, the same way Narendra Modi controls the Chief Minister of Kerala.” This analogy was intended to emphasize the dynamic of control and influence in political relationships.

Mixed Ideologies and Upcoming Elections

As the political landscape heats up ahead of the Assembly elections, Gandhi characterized the contest as one between conflicting ideologies. He stated, “This election is a fight between two ideologies,” representing the Left Front and the United Democratic Front (UDF) led by Congress. He highlighted the unusual collaboration perceived between the BJP and the LDF, insisting that such an alliance would typically be unexpected, as it juxtaposes a Left party with an ideology normally associated with the far-right.

Counterarguments from the Chief Minister

In response to Gandhi’s criticisms, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan accused the Congress party of serving as an auxiliary force for the BJP, dubbing them the “B-team” of the central government. This back-and-forth illustrates the intensifying political rivalry as each party seeks to establish its narrative while contesting the Assembly elections in Kerala.
