Punjab Law Student Dies After Shooting Classmate and Himself

The CSR Journal Magazine

A first-year law student who fatally shot his female classmate inside a classroom at Mai Bhago Law College before turning the gun on himself has died from his injuries, police said on Thursday. The incident, captured on CCTV, has shocked the college community and prompted a detailed police investigation.

The deceased, identified as Prince Raj (20) of Mallian village, was admitted to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in Amritsarin critical condition after the attack. He succumbed to his wounds late on Wednesday night, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagdeep Singh.

Fatal Shooting Inside Classroom

On February 9, Prince allegedly pulled a pistol from his bag and shot 19-year-old Sandeep Kaur, his classmate from Naushehra Pannuan, inside their classroom in Usma village before shooting himself in the head. The entire episode, which unfolded in seconds, was recorded on a CCTV camera installed in the room, showing other students present at the time fleeing in panic after hearing the gunshots.

Initial police reports said Sandeep died instantly at the scene. Following the shooting, Prince was rushed to hospital, where he remained under medical care until his death. Authorities said the weapon used appeared to be illegal, and have seized it as part of the investigation.

Probe Into Motive And Campus Security

Police have registered a case under Section 103 (punishment for murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant provisions of the Arms Act, and are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy.

Preliminary inquiries suggest the incident may have stemmed from a “friendship angle” and possible tensions between the two students, though investigators have not confirmed a definitive motive. Authorities are also probing how the accused brought a firearm onto the college campus.

Fellow students and staff were left traumatised by the sudden violence, and police are continuing to collect statements from witnesses. The college authorities have been coordinating with local police as the probe progresses.

The double tragedy has once again raised concerns about campus safety and access controls, as the community seeks answers and accountability in the aftermath of the deadly incident.
