ABVP’s recent triumph in the Panjab University students’ council elections signals a crucial moment for the political landscape in Punjab, as the state prepares for elections in 2027. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has secured the presidency for the second year in a row, a significant achievement considering the political dynamics among youth voters.

Official results released on September 1, indicate that ABVP candidate Ankit Bidhan defeated his rival from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s student wing, Adil Brar, by a margin of 512 votes. This victory is noteworthy not only because of its significance in relation to the upcoming assembly elections but also because it marks the first time in the history of Panjab University that ABVP has won the top student post for consecutive terms. Prior to this, the ABVP had not won the election in nearly fifty years, which makes this successive win all the more remarkable.

Political Implications of the Victory

The implications of ABVP’s win extend beyond mere student politics, as it comes at a time when the BJP is reportedly attempting to rebuild its alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). The SAD’s student wing, the Students’ Organisation of India (SOI), played a critical role in supporting ABVP. This collaboration occurs against a backdrop of their prior split in 2020 over contentious farm reform laws, which have since been withdrawn.

Despite the significance of this student council victory, experts caution against interpreting it as a direct forecast for the 2027 assembly elections. Nevertheless, it provides the BJP with a platform to potentially portray itself as gaining favour among Punjab’s youth, a demographic that has displayed discontent with the party recently.

The election for the Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) presidency was marked by fierce competition, with ABVP facing formidable challenges from AAP’s student wing and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), associated with the Congress party. The NSUI notably increased its vote share compared to the previous year, highlighting the shifting political currents among student voters.

Significance of SAD Support

An intriguing element of this election was the support extended to ABVP by the SAD’s student organisation. Initially, the SAD had nominated its own candidate; however, after this nomination was rejected, they shifted their support to Bidhan. While Bidhan has acknowledged the aid received from the SAD, he has clarified that this should not necessarily be interpreted as a precursor to a formal alliance for the upcoming Assembly elections. Political analysts, including Kuldeep Singh, suggest that the coordination between the ABVP and SAD’s student wing could not have occurred without the strategic blessing from higher officials within the respective parties.
