Pregnant Defence Ministry Employee Dies by Suicide Amid Allegations of Harassment

The CSR Journal Magazine

A pregnant woman employed as an Assistant Section Officer in the Ministry of Defence tragically died by suicide at her residence in Dwarka, Delhi, on August 21. The victim, identified as 30-year-old Naziya Khanam, was reportedly subjected to ongoing mental and physical harassment by her husband and in-laws, as stated by her family. According to a First Information Report (FIR), the allegations include repeated instances of verbal abuse, physical assault, and threats to her safety.

Naziya was married to Ajm Ali Khan on April 11, 2026. Her father, Towab Khan, claims that she communicated her distress to her family over phone calls but did not see any change in her husband’s behaviour despite raising her concerns. The FIR was filed under Sections 85 and 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

On the morning of August 21, around 4 am, the family received a distressing call informing them of Naziya’s death by suicide. However, her family expressed serious doubts about the circumstances surrounding her death, suggesting that it was staged to appear as a suicide. They allege that the ongoing harassment could have led her to take her own life.

Family’s Response and Legal Action

Following the incident, Naziya’s family is demanding a thorough investigation and legal action against those they believe are responsible for her death. They have requested an FIR against the accused, including her husband, mother-in-law, and father-in-law, and called for a post-mortem examination along with video documentation of the evidence.

Upon arriving at the residence, Sub-Inspector Satpal Dagar learned from Ajm Ali Khan that following an argument, he had locked himself in a room and later discovered Naziya hanging from a window. The police subsequently requested a crime team for inspection and documentation of the scene.

As the post-mortem could not be conducted on the same day due to procedural delays, statements from the deceased’s father and brother were recorded later by Executive Magistrate Bijwasan. The family is urging for appropriate legal measures to be taken, highlighting the family’s belief that there are significant grounds for criminal charges against those involved.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Concern

Authorities have registered the case under the relevant sections of the BNS, and police investigations are reportedly underway. The circumstances surrounding Naziya’s death have raised concerns over the treatment of women in marital homes, particularly in the context of harassment and domestic violence.

The tragic incident has sparked a public discourse around the protections available for women facing similar issues and the need for better enforcement of laws to safeguard their rights within the family structure. Community leaders and advocacy groups are calling for enhanced awareness and intervention strategies to address such pressing societal issues.

As this case progresses, it remains to be seen how the investigation will unfold and what implications it may have for both the victim’s family and broader societal awareness regarding domestic harassment. The focus remains on ensuring justice for Naziya Khanam and preventing such incidents in the future.
