Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that China and India must approach their bilateral ties from a strategic viewpoint, focusing on long-term development. This was discussed during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 12, in New Delhi, which took place on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit.

During the conversation, Xi noted that despite the differences between the two nations, they have historically supported each other in their quest for mutual development. He expressed satisfaction with the progress of their relations over the years and highlighted the importance of these two populous nations working together for common goals.

Xi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to meet again and congratulated India on successfully hosting the BRICS summit. He remarked that this was his second visit to New Delhi within 12 years, revealing that he and Modi have met over 20 times since they first established their diplomatic ties. Such ongoing interactions have fostered significant agreements between the two countries.

Shared Responsibilities and Future Cooperation

The Chinese President reiterated that both nations, as part of the Global South, bear essential responsibilities toward shaping a shared future for humanity. He mentioned that collaboration between China and India could result in beneficial outcomes for both sides, urging them to strive for sustainable development within the BRICS framework.

In his remarks, Xi called for a commitment to high-quality cooperation aimed at creating a more equitable and inclusive world. This approach, he argued, should contribute positively to global peace, stability, and development. There is a mutual understanding that the two nations can learn from each other’s strengths to navigate their unique developmental challenges.

During the bilateral discussions, Prime Minister Modi expressed appreciation for China’s support during India’s tenure as the BRICS chair. Modi welcomed Xi warmly and underscored the significance of the two countries advancing their cooperative agenda further.

Addressing Regional Conflicts and Future Initiatives

The BRICS Summit also addressed pressing global issues, such as tensions in West Asia. The New Delhi Declaration was unanimously adopted, highlighting concerns over escalating conflicts and advocating for diplomatic efforts to ensure regional peace and security.

Xi spoke about the toll that ongoing conflicts have taken on people in the region and acknowledged that resolving these issues would require political commitment and a focus on achieving a comprehensive ceasefire. He expressed China’s willingness to collaborate with BRICS nations to restore peace and stability in the Middle East.

Moreover, the declaration underscored the need to safeguard civilian infrastructure and ensure the protection of nuclear facilities under the International Atomic Energy Agency’s supervision. All parties were urged to adhere to established international laws to maintain smooth global trade and energy flows.

As China prepares to take over the BRICS chair in the following year, Xi expressed confidence in building consensus among members to enhance future collaboration. The upcoming summit will prioritise fostering deeper connections and shared objectives among member states.

Furthermore, during the summit, Modi proposed several measures aimed at reforming global governance. He emphasised the necessity for the Global South to transform its role from being merely compliant to actively shaping global rules and regulations. This vision aims to elevate the voices of developing nations in international decision-making processes.
