The CSR Journal Magazine

R Praggnanandhaa has marked a significant milestone in his chess career by winning the Norway Chess 2026 tournament. This achievement positions him as the first Indian to secure the title since the event commenced in 2013. After clinching the championship, Praggnanandhaa lauded the strength of the competition, noting the presence of world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen among the elite players as a key factor in making his triumph especially memorable.

The level of competition at Norway Chess was formidable, with all competitors in the Open section boasting ratings above 2700. Praggnanandhaa himself highlighted the distinguished quality of the event, stating that unlike other tournaments, which often feature a mix of players with varying ratings, Norway Chess consisted solely of top-tier talent.

Reflecting on this victory, Praggnanandhaa remarked, “I think this is like the biggest win of my career. It was also stronger in terms of average rating.” His journey to the title included defeating Carlsen twice, an extraordinary feat against one of the legends of chess. This triumph adds to his accomplishments and solidifies his place in the chess world.

Resilience Fuels Late Surge to Victory

Praggnanandhaa’s path to winning the tournament was characterised by resilience. After encountering challenges at the start, he rallied to secure four straight victories, accumulating a total of 18 points. His impressive comeback demonstrates not only his skill but also his determination under pressure.

His significant victories included two wins over the seven-time champion Carlsen, further elevating the profile of his achievement. “Winning this is more special with Magnus being there, and winning four games in a row certainly comes right at the top,” he declared, acknowledging the impact of his late tournament resurgence.

The title was solidified after Wesley So did not secure a classical win against Alireza Firouzja in the final round. This match result enabled Praggnanandhaa to maintain control over his position against Vincent Keymer, ensuring that he finished on top of the leaderboard.

Celebrations and Growing Popularity

The success of Praggnanandhaa extended beyond the tournament itself, as he experienced a heartfelt reception from fans in Oslo. Following his impressive performance, supporters gathered to congratulate the young Grandmaster, creating a celebratory atmosphere that reflected the significance of his achievement.

Despite the rigours of the tournament, Praggnanandhaa engaged with the crowd, smiling for photographs and signing autographs. His graciousness in interacting with fans highlighted his rising popularity in the chess community and marked a fitting conclusion to what has been a historic week for the emerging star.

This triumph at Norway Chess is expected to enhance Praggnanandhaa’s stature as one of the brightest talents in the chess arena. With the World Rapid Team Championship in Hong Kong scheduled for later this month, he plans to take a short break before resuming competitive play, buoyed by the confidence gained from what he described as the most special title of his career.
