They are demanding an explanation from Home Minister Amit Shah in light of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation. Congress MP Jebi Mather emphasised that the party would persist in seeking answers from the Home Minister regarding the treatment of the students involved.

Mather stated, “Before this matter was escalated to the task force, a significant question arises about the situation faced by the students. What transpired, and how was it allowed to happen? Rahul Gandhi has posed numerous inquiries that need to be addressed. Our resolve to obtain these answers remains steadfast, and the INDIA bloc will convene to determine our next steps.” His remarks indicate a firm commitment to pursuing accountability.

Concerns Raised Over Use of Force Against Students

Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury voiced her strong support for Rahul Gandhi’s standpoint against the alleged use of force by police, calling for a public apology from the Home Minister. She stated, “We must not shy away from this crucial issue. The judgement displayed here raises serious concerns about the orders given to the police regarding the use of crowd control tactics against citizens.” Chowdhury’s comments underscore a growing unease regarding public trust in law enforcement amid reports of excessive violence.

She also questioned the legitimacy of those enforcing law and order during the protests, implying doubts about whether those in uniform were genuinely serving as police officers. Her comments reflect broader anxieties about the safety and rights of peaceful protesters, particularly students engaging in democratic expression.

Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat referred to Pradhan’s resignation as a “major setback” for the ruling government, asserting that the implications extend beyond a single minister’s departure. Bhagat pointed out, “This situation signifies not just a victory for Rahul Gandhi but also highlights the voices of the youth involved in this struggle. Moreover, the accountability sought here is crucial to prevent future incidents.” His remarks stress the need for systemic changes rather than merely shifting personnel within the Cabinet.

Opposition Leader Questions Government’s Accountability

Opposition Leader in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has also been vocal in critiquing the Centre’s handling of the protests. Following Pradhan’s resignation, Gandhi directed his focus towards the police actions during the protest that occurred on July 20. On social media, he questioned whether Amit Shah had personally endorsed the use of force, including pellet guns and tear gas, in handling demonstrators protesting the NEET-UG examination leak.

The case of a 19-year-old student, Sahil Lochab, who reportedly sustained serious injuries, has also been highlighted by Gandhi, raising additional concerns about the consequences of police action. Reports indicate that Lochab might face the loss of an eye due to pellet injuries sustained during the protests. This individual case serves to illustrate the broader implications of governmental and police response to civil unrest.
