PM Narendra Modi Launches Kaynes Technology Semiconductor Facility in Gujarat

On March 31, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Kaynes Technology semiconductor plant located in Sanand, Gujarat, signaling the start of production at the facility. During his address, the Prime Minister highlighted the rapid development of India’s semiconductor ecosystem, noting his earlier visit to the Micron plant on February 28, just one month prior.

PM Modi praised Kaynes Technology and the Gujarat government for their contributions, expressing pride in the entry of an Indian firm into the semiconductor chip manufacturing sector. He emphasized that this development places Kaynes within the global semiconductor supply chain, stating, “This is a wonderful beginning. Many Indian companies will collaborate globally to create a robust semiconductor supply chain.” The Prime Minister highlighted the mantra of ‘Make in India, Make for the World’ as a guiding principle.

Sanand Facility to Export Power Modules, Links to Silicon Valley

The facility aims to supply Intelligent Power Modules to a company based in California, with significant portions of its output already designated for export. Modi explained that this creates a new link between Sanand and Silicon Valley, saying the power modules produced at the plant will ultimately benefit American firms and, by extension, the global market.

Intelligent Power Modules Key to EVs and Industrial Growth

In his speech, the Prime Minister detailed the importance of the Intelligent Power Modules, noting their role in bolstering both the electric vehicle sector and heavy industries both in India and abroad. He depicted these global collaborations as crucial for a sustainable future and noted, “This is not merely about a single product but an initiative for India to establish itself as a reliable semiconductor supplier worldwide.”

Supply Chain Disruptions Highlight Need for India’s Semiconductor Push

Addressing the significant challenges faced in recent years, including the pandemic and geopolitical tensions, PM Modi remarked on the disruptions in global supply chains, particularly in semiconductors and rare earth minerals. He stated that India’s progression in this domain is vital for global development, underscoring, “The advancement of a democratic nation like India is crucial for the overall growth of humanity.”

India-Semiconductor Mission Launched to Drive Self-Reliance

The focus on establishing India as a global semiconductor hub was initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the launch of the India-Semiconductor Mission in 2021. Modi explained the concept of self-reliance in semiconductors also extending to industries such as AI, electric vehicles, defense, and electronics. He characterized the mission as a demonstration of India’s confidence.

Rs 1.6 Lakh Crore Projects and Indigenous Chip Development Underway

During his address, the Prime Minister provided updates on ten ongoing projects valued collectively at over Rs 1,60,000 crore across six states, with both the Kaynes and Micron initiatives playing pivotal roles. He also discussed the development of the indigenous Dhruv 64 microprocessor, which serves essential functions in sectors such as 5G infrastructure and automotive electronics. Modi stated, “India is building capacity to design and manufacture at every level of the semiconductor supply chain.”

India-Semiconductor Mission 2.0 to Strengthen Domestic Ecosystem

Announcing the upcoming India-Semiconductor Mission 2.0 as outlined in this year’s Union Budget, the Prime Minister emphasized the emphasis on domestic production of semiconductor equipment and materials. The aim is to develop a comprehensive Indian semiconductor ecosystem to facilitate significant partnerships in both local and global supply chains.

Focus on Skill Development and Startup Ecosystem in Chip Design

PM Modi also highlighted initiatives aimed at cultivating a skilled workforce, noting the imminent accomplishment of training over 85,000 design professionals. He mentioned the Chips to Startup program, which has granted nearly 400 academic institutions and startups access to advanced design tools, resulting in the production of over 55 chips. The launch of the Kaynes facility underscores India’s commitment to achieving self-reliance in the semiconductor industry.

India’s Semiconductor Market Set for Massive Growth

Citing estimates, the Prime Minister pointed out that India’s semiconductor market currently amounts to approximately USD 50 billion, with projections indicating it may exceed USD 100 billion by the decade’s end. He recognized the heightened interest from global investors in India’s semiconductor initiatives and stated, “Our objective is to produce the maximum quantity of chips required for domestic use right here in India.”

Strengthening Raw Material Supply and Critical Minerals Strategy

In his remarks, PM Modi reiterated India’s efforts to establish a resilient supply chain for raw materials, mentioning India’s affiliations with Pax Silica and the establishment of the National Critical Minerals Mission. He discussed a Rs 1,500-crore plan for mineral recycling and the announcement of a Rare Earth Corridor connecting various coastal states.

India’s ‘Techade’ Vision Backed by AI and Digital Growth

The Prime Minister characterized this decade as India’s ‘Techade,’ highlighting the current period as pivotal for establishing the future technological landscape. He touched on India’s leadership in AI adoption, the success of Digital India and fintech, alongside the recent AI Impact Summit, as indicators of the nation’s commitment to technology.

Policy Push Positions India as Future Global Tech Leader

Modi asserted that India is positioned to lead transformative changes rather than merely observe them. He listed key policy initiatives, including opening the space sector to private entities and substantial investments in quantum computing as foundational steps for long-term technology and energy security. He concluded by expressing confidence that the output from the Kaynes facility will further bolster India’s reputation as a global manufacturing hub.
