Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been honoured with Sweden’s prestigious ‘Royal Order of Polar Star, Degree Commander Grand Cross’, acknowledging his significant contributions to strengthening bilateral relations. This accolade is the highest honour bestowed upon a Head of Government, marking a notable accomplishment for Modi as his 31st international award.

According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, the honour was conferred by Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. The spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, commented on the award, highlighting it as a reaffirmation of the friendship between the two nations and the remarkable leadership that Modi has displayed in fostering the India-Sweden relationship.

In his acceptance remarks, Modi dedicated the honour to the historical ties shared between India and Sweden. He expressed that the award symbolises the warmth and affection between the peoples of both countries, reflecting a deep-rooted friendship.

Historical Significance of the Award

The Royal Order of Polar Star was established in 1748 and aims to recognise personal efforts for Sweden or in support of Swedish interests. The honour is particularly intended for contributions within public activities and successful completion of public duties. This long-standing tradition highlights Sweden’s commitment to acknowledging individuals who significantly impact the nation or its interests.

During the award ceremony, both Prime Minister Modi and his Swedish counterpart, Ulf Kristersson, exchanged special gifts that celebrated the works of Rabindranath Tagore. This exchange underscored the enduring intellectual and civilisational connections between India and Sweden.

Tagore was the first non-European Nobel Laureate, although he could not attend the ceremony in Sweden in 1913 due to travel constraints. However, he was later received by King Gustav V during a visit to Sweden in 1921. This year also marks a century since Tagore’s historic journey to Sweden in 1926, emphasising the long-standing cultural ties between the two nations.

PM Modi’s Visit to Sweden

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Sweden on Sunday, May 17, 2026, for a two-day state visit, where he was warmly welcomed by Ulf Kristersson at Gothenburg Airport. This visit aims to further enhance ties between India and Sweden, focusing on various mutual interests.

During his time in Sweden, Modi is expected to engage in discussions regarding economic cooperation, technology exchange, and collaborative efforts in addressing global challenges. The visit aims to reinforce the strategic partnership that both nations have developed over the years.

This diplomatic engagement is part of Modi’s ongoing efforts to cultivate deeper ties with Scandinavian countries and enhance international collaboration in various sectors. The meeting with Swedish leaders will likely explore avenues for advancing trade, investment, and cultural exchange, solidifying a relationship built on mutual respect and shared values.
