The CSR Journal Magazine

In a significant development for urban transport, Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed the extension of the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited’s North-South corridor from GIFT City to Shahpur. This initiative, according to PM Modi, is expected to improve the connectivity between Ahmedabad and GIFT City, thereby fostering commercial activities and enhancing the overall quality of life.

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Modi, approved the extension, which will span 3.33 kilometers and will feature three elevated stations. The project is slated for completion within a four-year timeframe and is projected to cost approximately Rs 1,067.35 crore. This new corridor is anticipated to significantly enhance the transportation infrastructure connecting Ahmedabad and the GIFT region.

Project Aims to Enhance Connectivity and Commerce

The extension is designed to benefit a wide range of stakeholders, including multinational corporations, educational institutions, and various commercial entities situated along the proposed route. It aims to address the travel needs of daily commuters moving between Ahmedabad and GIFT City, which encompasses business, employment, and educational purposes. The upgraded connectivity is expected to lead to an improvement in overall network integration and passenger convenience.

Additionally, the project is forecasted to create around 1,000 jobs during the construction phase. Furthermore, approximately 250 personnel will be employed for operations and maintenance after the project is completed. Apart from direct employment opportunities, the project is poised to generate indirect job prospects, thereby benefiting the wider economy of the region.

The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC), a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat, will be responsible for the implementation of this project. The agency focuses on enhancing metro rail services in the state, contributing to urban mobility and sustainable transport solutions.

Presently, the Gujarat Metro system includes the 68.28-kilometer Ahmedabad Metro Phase-I and Phase-II, encompassing the North-South Corridor from APMC to Motera Stadium and the East-West Corridor from Thaltej Gam to Vastral Gam. Since becoming operational, they have seen significant commuter usage, with daily ridership reaching approximately 160,000. Phase-I was launched in September 2022, while Phase-II began operations in January 2026.
