The CSR Journal Magazine

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar underscored the longstanding relationship between India and Africa, articulating that it is founded on mutual solidarity and a shared aspiration for equality. During his visit to Ethiopia on 6 October 2026, Jaishankar noted that both regions are committed to the principles of representation and the autonomy to influence their own destinies. He conveyed that such cooperation is crucial for fostering a more equitable global landscape.

Key Areas of Cooperation Identified

During his address at the Adwa Memorial Museum, Jaishankar identified several focal points for cooperation, including trade, investment, technological advancement, and health security. He asserted that these domains are vital for developing a robust partnership between India and African nations. Jaishankar specifically cautioned against the adverse effects of inundating markets with low-cost products or imposing restrictions on market accessibility, emphasising the need for self-reliance and industrial development.

Jaishankar’s three-nation African tour, which included visits to Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana before arriving in Ethiopia, allowed him to highlight the strong economic ties between India and various African countries. He discussed how these ties extend across diverse sectors such as manufacturing, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, energy, and agriculture. The minister reaffirmed that India is committed to bolstering these connections.

He revealed that India’s development initiatives in Africa are aligned with the specific priorities of partner nations. Jaishankar stated that over 220 developmental projects have been supported by India in critical areas, including power generation, healthcare, and infrastructure. He also noted that more than 70,000 African students and professionals have benefitted from India’s capacity-building efforts over the past decade.

Technological Advancements and Health Cooperation Highlighted

In discussing technology, Jaishankar pointed out the increasing importance of digital collaboration between India and African nations. He remarked on the transformative potential of digital governance and ongoing cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence, space technologies, and drones. These advancements are positioned as new frontiers for collaboration and development.

Jaishankar also emphasised India’s commitment to strengthening health security in Africa. He spoke of the country’s contributions through vaccine support, pharmaceutical investments, and the provision of advanced medical equipment, such as Bhabhatron cancer treatment machines. This commitment is seen as pivotal in addressing public health challenges in the region.

In a separate communication via X, Jaishankar discussed the shared vision of ‘AI for All’ between India and Ethiopia, indicating its potential to drive development and economic growth. His visit to the Ethiopia Science Museum reinforced this narrative, as he characterised it as a reflection of Ethiopia’s ambition to nurture a technology-driven economy. The minister asserted that future collaborations would increasingly rely on science and innovation as central elements of the India-Ethiopia strategic partnership.

 Focus on Developmental Engagement

Jaishankar’s statements and engagements in Ethiopia illustrate India’s commitment to a deeper and more comprehensive partnership with African nations. The emphasis on industrial growth, technological innovation, and health cooperation serves as a framework for future collaborations. India aims to foster a supportive environment that prioritises skill development and aims for mutual benefit in its engagements across the African continent.
