Gujarat CM Inaugurates First Chintan Shibir of Roads and Buildings Department

The inauguration of the first two-day Chintan Shibir of the Roads and Buildings Department was marked by comments from Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who underscored the importance of collaborative efforts and discussions in enhancing the state’s infrastructure. The event, taking place in Gandhinagar, had a central theme focused on ‘Gati – Gunvatta – Gaurav’, which translates to accelerating infrastructure for a developed Gujarat by 2047.

During his address, CM Patel highlighted the role of the Chintan Shibir tradition, established by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2003, which encourages collective brainstorming. He stated, “Coming together is the beginning, thinking together is progress, and working together is success.” This remark illustrates the government’s commitment to fostering teamwork among officials in the department.

He further emphasised that the Roads and Buildings Department has a crucial responsibility in developing roadways, bridges, and connectivity infrastructure, which directly impacts the lives of citizens. CM Patel pointed out the need for vigilance in maintaining quality standards and delivering superior work, urging officials to meet public expectations regarding infrastructure development.

Emphasis on Quality and Accountability

CM Patel remarked on the public’s readiness to highlight shortcomings, which necessitates that the Roads and Buildings Department circumvent any potential lapses in quality. He made it clear that while unintentional errors could be rectified, deliberate mistakes would not be tolerated. This stance underscores the accountability that the department must uphold in its operations.

Attention to detail was a recurring theme in the Chief Minister’s address. He called for meticulous adherence to standard operating procedures during the tendering process and emphasised the significance of completing projects in a timely manner through collaborative efforts. He believes these practices are vital for sustaining the reputation of the department and ensuring that projects are executed to a high standard.

Additionally, CM Patel mentioned that Chintan Shibirs provide an opportunity for personal reflection among staff, encouraging officials to re-evaluate their roles in achieving overall goals for the state’s development. By fostering a culture of self-improvement, he hopes to inspire a positive shift not only in professional responsibilities but also in personal growth.

Support for Infrastructure Expansion and Acknowledgement of Performance

At the event’s commencement, publications were released by CM Patel, including documents related to Building Health Monitoring and Bridge Asset Management. This act signifies the department’s commitment to transparency and knowledge-sharing in its efforts to maintain infrastructure standards. Moreover, exceptional engineers and officials were recognised for their outstanding contributions, as gauged by the Governance Performance Index (GPI).

The Roads and Buildings Department manages an extensive network of 1.29 lakh kilometres of roads and maintains over 11,000 bridges, along with various government structures throughout urban and rural regions. Additionally, the department plays a role in connecting more than 18,000 villages and 14,000 hamlets under the Mukhyamantri Gram Sadak Yojana, illustrating its extensive reach and significance in regional development.

On this occasion, Chief Secretary MK Das extended congratulations to the department, reaffirming its role as a key driver of the state’s developmental agenda. He stated that the department not only facilitates infrastructure growth but also plays an essential role in disaster management and response, highlighting its historical significance as one of the government’s oldest and most prominent entities.
