Protesters Seek Shelter at Bangla Sahib, Detentions Follow as CJP Demonstration Intensifies

The CSR Journal Magazine

Reports emerged on Saturday indicating that Bangla Sahib had become a refuge for protesters engaged in a demonstration against the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in New Delhi. Visuals shared on social media depicted demonstrators rallying near the gurdwara, displaying a banner that demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar while calling for the discontinuation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

As the protest escalated, footage surfaced showing paramilitary forces reportedly detaining individuals within and around the gurdwara’s vicinity. This development raised concerns among demonstrators and observers about the methods employed by law enforcement during the protest.

Authorities deployed over 40,000 personnel from both the Delhi Police and the Central Armed Police Force in preparation for the protest. Barricades and spike strips were installed across key locations to manage the situation, as the CJP’s call for the CEC’s resignation intensified in light of alleged electoral irregularities.

Detention of BJP Leader’s Daughter Raises Eyebrows

Among those reportedly detained was Yashaswinee Raje Singh, the daughter of former BJP MLA Vikram Singh. She was apprehended near the gurdwara for allegedly sitting in a park and later confirmed on social media that she was being held at Keshav Puram police station. Singh has a history of involvement in protests, having previously been vocal during student demonstrations against alleged irregularities in examination papers.

Singh’s presence at the protest highlights the intersection of political lineage and activism in contemporary demonstrations. Her earlier support for the CJP during the education minister’s crisis added to her prominence in these ongoing protests.

The arrest of a figure connected to a major political party has raised questions regarding the use of law enforcement during civil demonstrations and its implications on the political landscape.

Bangla Sahib’s Role as a Historical Refuge

For many, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib has historically served as a sanctuary during unrest. A twenty-four-year-old protester noted that she had participated in various protests since the age of twenty, including movements against the Citizenship Amendment Act and advocating for farmers’ rights. This history of sheltering demonstrators connects the gurdwara with significant political activities in recent years.

In the lead-up to Saturday’s protest, demonstrators reportedly took refuge at the gurdwara after citywide restrictions were enforced on October 9, planning to join the larger demonstration the following day. Many expressed that when they found key protest locations like Jantar Mantar blocked, they returned to the gurdwara to continue their advocacy.

However, in the early afternoon, reports indicated that police personnel stormed the area around the gurdwara to detain several demonstrators gathered at the entrance, leading to a swift dispersal as chants of solidarity reverberated across the street.

Community Reactions to Police Action

The intervention of law enforcement at a religious site has prompted mixed reactions among the public and online users. Some individuals raised concerns over the sanctity of Bangla Sahib, questioning the appropriateness of police actions within a place of worship. Others, however, perceived the gurdwara as a necessary refuge for protesters, illustrating the complex relationship between religious spaces and political actions.

A social media user shared images depicting blocked roads surrounding the gurdwara, while expressing hope that devotees would still be able to participate in religious gatherings without disruption. The ongoing situation continues to fuel discussions on the boundaries between civic duty and religious respect amidst socio-political conflicts.

As the situation unfolds, the role of Gurudwara Bangla Sahib as both a religious and a political venue remains a focal point of contention among various stakeholders, reflecting the intricate dynamics at play within New Delhi’s landscape of protest and dissent.
