Piyush Goyal Highlights Peaceful Nature of Indian Diaspora Amid European Protests

The CSR Journal Magazine

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has commended the Indian diaspora as a “peace-loving” community, asserting that Indians are well-received in foreign nations due to their non-violent behaviour. His comments were made during a two-day visit to Germany, where he addressed members of the Indian community in Berlin. This statement comes in light of ongoing protests across Europe, particularly in France, where some demonstrations have turned violent.

During his address, Goyal emphasised that the Indian community has garnered respect abroad for their peaceful lifestyles and strong family values. He noted that the perception of Indians as law-abiding citizens contributes to their welcoming reception in host countries. “They know that the Indian people and the Indian community are peace-loving. They live with their families; they care for their families,” he stated.

Goyal further highlighted the importance of being regarded positively in foreign nations, stating, “An important statistic is how well you are respected in this country. The good part is you are very wanted, very welcome here. They know you don’t indulge in vandalism.” His remarks serve to contrast the peaceful nature of the Indian diaspora with the unrest seen in various parts of Europe.

Context of Protests in Europe

Protests against rising living costs, wage issues, and public service concerns have been prevalent in several European countries, including France and Italy. While many of these demonstrations have remained peaceful, there have been instances where protests escalated into clashes, looting, and vandalism. Goyal’s comments appear to be a response to the ongoing unrest, reinforcing the image of the Indian community as a stabilising presence in their host countries.

In his address, Goyal noted that the behaviour of the Indian community is often contrasted with the disturbances occurring elsewhere in Europe. He pointed out that the peaceful conduct of Indians contributes to their positive reputation and acceptance within diverse societies.

Goyal’s remarks also reflect a broader narrative about the Indian diaspora’s role in promoting harmony and stability in international contexts. His emphasis on the need for peaceful coexistence and respect for local laws resonates with the ongoing challenges faced by various communities in Europe.

Encouragement for Support Among Indian Students

During his interaction with the Indian community, Goyal also urged established members of the diaspora to extend support to Indian students arriving in Germany, especially those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. He emphasised that assistance from fellow Indians could facilitate the adjustment of newcomers to a new environment, helping them navigate the complexities of studying and living abroad.

Goyal praised the contributions of Indian workers in Germany, describing them as sincere and industrious. He acknowledged the role of the diaspora in fostering strong people-to-people ties and enhancing economic relations between India and Germany. This focus on collaboration aims to strengthen the bonds between the two nations.

As part of his visit, Goyal engaged with German government officials, business leaders, and representatives from research institutions. These discussions aimed to explore potential cooperation in various sectors, including trade, investment, advanced manufacturing, and emerging technologies. Goyal’s visit underscores the importance of international collaboration in addressing global challenges and promoting mutual growth.
