The floor leaders of various opposition parties are set to meet on Tuesday at 10 am in the office of Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge, to devise their approach for the second day of the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament. This gathering is part of their regular routine during parliamentary sessions to coordinate strategies and address pressing issues effectively.

Monsoon Session Starts with Disruptions

The opening day of the Monsoon session experienced significant disturbances, notably due to opposition members voicing concerns about the NEET-UG paper leak incident and alleged embezzlement linked to the Ram Mandir donation fund. Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were repeatedly disrupted, which led to the adjournment of proceedings for the day. Opposition leaders seized the opportunity to express their grievances against the government and advocate for accountability on these critical matters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, prior to the start of this session, took to the media to underscore the accomplishments both domestically and internationally that India has achieved over the past month. He expressed immense pride in India’s growing global stature and referenced the milestone of an Indian citizen visiting the International Space Station shortly before last year’s session. Furthermore, he applauded the significant achievement of the private space startup Skyroot in propelling the nation into private space exploration, noting that the team behind this development had an average age of just 28 years.

Modi characterised these advancements as enhancing national confidence, stating, “These startups driven by our youth have firmly embedded India’s flag in space, making our country’s profile universal and accepted across the globe.” He attributed these entrepreneurial successes to the government’s swift and transformative policy modifications aimed at fostering innovation.

Opposition Critiques PM Modi’s Statements

In response to the Prime Minister’s remarks, Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, accused Modi of attempting to divert attention from significant issues facing the nation. Kharge asserted that Modi’s role seemed to revolve around mocking others while failing to provide tangible solutions. He challenged the Prime Minister’s credibility, questioning the efficacy of his administration and the trust formed for managing funds related to the Ram Mandir, which he alleged has become a centre for corruption.

Kharge also highlighted the distress faced by lakhs of students affected by the NEET situation, asking, “Who is responsible for destroying their lives?” His remarks reflect the growing tension between the opposition and the ruling government as the monsoon session unfolds, indicating a contentious political climate.

The Monsoon session of Parliament is scheduled to continue until August 13, during which the opposition intends to persistently press their demands and seek accountability from the government regarding the issues that have arisen. The outcome of the ongoing discussions and debates may significantly shape the political landscape in India as the session progresses.
