Over 100 Jaipur School children Write to PM Seeking Freedom for Amer Fort Elephants

Amer Fort in Jaipur is famous for elephant rides, and tourists are often seen enjoying the rides, ignoring the fact that this is animal cruelty.

But children have taken a stand against this. On the occasion of World Animal Day, more than 100 children of Cambridge School in Jaipur have written to Prime Minister Modi to take action and end this cruel practice of elephant rides at Amer Fort.

Children are supporting campaign

They are supporting the campaign of World Animal Protection, which has been going on for years to stop cruelty to elephants at Amer Fort.

After learning and realizing that elephants belong to the wilderness and should not be kept in captivity, the children of the private school decided to write this letter to the Prime Minister.

Writing to PM is a bold step

“We are extremely pleased that children, the voices and representatives of India’s future, have taken the bold step of writing to the country’s most powerful decision-maker,” says Gajender Kumar Sharma, Country Director, World Animal Protection in India.

Sharma added that children are stewards of India’s biological diversity, and it gives immense pleasure to see them take this initiative to write to the Prime Minister of India.

Call for collective action

This year also marks the 75th year of World Animal Protection’s founding, decades of protecting animals across the world. From rescuing animals in disasters, to opposing factory farming, to improving living conditions in zoos, to sterilizing street dogs, the work of World Animal Protection is widespread.

Sharma, in a conversation with the media, shared that the organisation has continued to work closely with governments, civil society, and communities to promote animal-friendly policies.

Kerala sets an example

Jaipur has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage City, drawing millions of visitors from around the world. Tourists have many alternative opportunities to immerse themselves in Rajasthan’s rich history and traditions, without resorting to animal cruelty.

Despite widespread backlash, the continued use of captive elephants for riding at Amer Fort goes against the dignity and heritage status of the Pink City. States like Kerala, on the other hand, have made progress, with plans underway for a large-scale elephant sanctuary—an example that could be replicated in Rajasthan.

Tribute to Dr. Jane Goodall

Today, on the occasion of World Animal Day, World Animal Protection pays tribute to Dr. Jane Goodall, who dedicated her life to animals.

World Animal Day follows Gandhi Jayanti, reminding us of Mahatma Gandhi’s belief in compassion that extends to all living beings.

To mark this day, a hundred children of a private school and World Animal Protection have requested government and non-government stakeholders to ensure that the elephants of Amer Fort are released to a wildlife-friendly sanctuary, where they can live with dignity.

One of the children shared that they are hopeful the Prime Minister will heed their heartfelt pleas, intervene, and allow elephants to live in the wilderness.
