North Korea Backs Iran’s New Leader, Condemns US-Israel Actions

The CSR Journal Magazine

North Korea has voiced its support for the recent appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as the supreme leader of Iran. The announcement was made following the killing of the previous leader, Ali Khamenei, in what North Korea termed an “illegal” military attack by the United States and Israel. A spokesperson from North Korea’s foreign ministry conveyed this sentiment on Wednesday, underlining Pyongyang’s respect for Tehran’s governance choice and the democratic process involved in electing a new leader. “We respect the right and choice of the Iranian people to elect their Supreme Leader,” the spokesperson stated.

In the same statement, North Korea strongly condemned the actions of the US and Israel, which it characterized as aggressive. “We express grave concern and strongly condemn the aggression of the United States and Israel, which, by launching an unlawful military attack against Iran, are undermining the foundations of regional peace and security and increasing instability in the international landscape,” added the spokesperson. The official remarks highlighted that such military interventions threaten the political system and territorial integrity of sovereign nations and must be denounced globally.

The hostilities in the region escalated following a US-Israeli strike on February 28, which resulted in the death of Ali Khamenei. This event sparked a conflict that continues to affect regional dynamics. Previously, North Korea had denounced the offensive, describing it as typical of “gangster-like conduct.” In a separate development, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised the launch of strategic cruise missiles from the newly commissioned Choe Hyon destroyer. During this test, Kim emphasized the importance of developing and reinforcing the nation’s nuclear deterrent capabilities. He articulated the strategic goal of maintaining a powerful and reliable nuclear deterrent.

This missile launch marks the second instance in which Kim oversaw a test from the destroyer, as he expressed his support for equipping the country’s naval forces with nuclear weaponry. The United States has consistently aimed to dismantle North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, while Pyongyang defends its weapons development as a necessary measure for deterring threats from South Korea and its allies, particularly the US. In recent months, the administration under President Donald Trump has shown indications of renewed interest in high-level negotiations with North Korea, with Kim asserting that mutual understanding could be achieved if Washington recognized North Korea’s status as a nuclear state.
