Noida International Airport in Jewar Begins Operations, Targets 1.2 Crore Annual Passengers

The CSR Journal Magazine

Noida International Airport, located in Jewar, commenced operations on Monday, marking an important milestone as Uttar Pradesh’s fifth international airport. The inaugural flight, coming from Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport, successfully landed at the new airport at 8.05 am. This facility is being developed in phases, with an initial capacity to handle 1.2 crore passengers annually, supported by a single runway. The airport’s construction is estimated to cost about Rs 5,000 crore.

Upon reaching full operational status, the airport is projected to accommodate as many as 7 crore passengers each year. It will feature six runways and span nearly 13,000 acres. The overall development of the site is expected to incur a total expenditure of about Rs 30,000 crore, establishing it as the largest international airport in Uttar Pradesh when the project is completed.

Impact on Air Traffic and Regional Development

The introduction of Noida International Airport is anticipated to alleviate congestion at one of India’s busiest air traffic hubs, the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI). In August 2025, IGI Airport recorded an impressive passenger count of around 10.9 crore, classifying it amongst only six airports globally with such a capacity. The increasing passenger traffic at IGI in recent years has resulted in tighter flight slots and extended delays during peak hours, largely due to the limited expansion options available within the national capital.

Moreover, the establishment of the new airport is expected to stimulate regional development significantly. It is predicted to catalyse a surge in housing demand, alongside an acceleration in commercial activities in the vicinity. This demand for real estate can open up opportunities for various businesses seeking to enter the market, especially in regions with more affordable rental prices compared to Gurgaon and Delhi, while still having access to a robust market of potential consumers.

According to Anarock Research, the average residential property price in Noida currently stands at around Rs 4,780 per sq ft. In the neighbouring Greater Noida, prices are approximately Rs 3,320 per sq ft, while regions along the Yamuna Expressway show similar affordability at around Rs 3,350 per sq ft. These figures illustrate the area’s relative affordability and indicate notable potential for growth.

Future Prospects and Community Benefits

The long-term implications of Noida International Airport’s operation can extend beyond immediate air traffic relief. Enhanced connectivity may lead to improved economic conditions in the region, as new job opportunities arise from both the airport and accompanying urbanisation. The projected growth in commercial real estate is likely to create numerous employment prospects, thereby beneficial for local communities.

Additionally, as air travel becomes more accessible, diverse business opportunities may emerge, prompting an increased influx of investment in the surrounding areas. This, combined with infrastructural developments linked to the airport, is expected to enrich the local economy significantly.

As the project progresses towards its full-fledged status, stakeholders are optimistic about the role Noida International Airport will play not only in serving as a crucial transit point but also in fuelling broader economic growth across Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region.
