Nepal Aims for Balanced Ties with India and China While Prioritising Economic Diplomacy

The CSR Journal Magazine

Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Shisir Khanal, has expressed the country’s intention to foster balanced relationships with all friendly nations, particularly its neighbours India and China. He emphasised the importance of economic diplomacy, declaring that the new government’s foreign policy will be centred on national interest. Khanal stated that his recent visit to India, marking the first high-level interaction between the two countries since the establishment of Nepal’s new government in March, was a “special one.”

During his trip to India from June 5 to 7, Khanal engaged in extensive discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, and met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. This visit focused primarily on economic collaboration, with both parties keen to revive bilateral mechanisms that would enhance cooperation.

The foreign minister noted that “result-oriented discussions” took place on various vital topics, including trade, energy, connectivity, investment, and border management. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to resolving border disputes that had emerged in recent years, signalling a desire to address misunderstandings amicably.

Recent Historical Context of Bilateral Relations

This visit came in the wake of controversial remarks made by Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah regarding the border issue, wherein he suggested the involvement of external parties such as China and the UK for resolution. The Indian government responded by firmly rejecting any proposal for third-party involvement.

Khanal’s visit to New Delhi was followed closely by a four-day trip to Beijing beginning June 14, where he met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and other senior leaders. He stated that the aim of these engagements is to maintain harmonious relationships with all friendly nations, while reinforcing the significance of economic diplomacy tailored to Nepal’s national interests.

“We are striving to cultivate balanced relationships with our neighbours and aim to attract more foreign investment through effective economic diplomacy,” Khanal remarked. His discussions in Beijing covered critical areas such as infrastructure, technology transfer, and strengthening people-to-people relations.

Commitment to Broaden Cooperation

Khanal highlighted that fruitful discussions during both trips encompassed a diverse range of themes including agriculture, trade, energy, and border management. He reiterated Nepal’s ambition to expand its international partnerships through enhanced cooperation in various sectors.

The foreign minister articulated that Nepal is working to establish deeper ties with both India and China. The new government is actively pursuing balanced engagement strategies that encompass economic diplomacy and dialogues centred around trade and connectivity.

In summarising his diplomatic efforts, Khanal stated that Nepal’s approach is aimed at strengthening its presence in the regional landscape through diplomatic channels focused on mutual benefits. This commitment to nurturing relationships rests on the principles of coexistence and collaboration.
