A woman jail official in Madhya Pradesh’s Satna has married a former inmate who had previously served a life sentence for murder, following a relationship that originated within the confines of the prison. The couple, Firoza Khatoon and Dharmendra Singh, reportedly developed their bond while working together during Singh’s incarceration. Their connection evolved from professional interactions to a personal relationship that eventually led to marriage.

Dharmendra Singh, a resident of Chandla in Chhatarpur district, was convicted for his involvement in the murder of a local councillor in 2007 and the subsequent disposal of the body. Following his conviction, he was sentenced to life imprisonment and spent almost 14 years in the Satna Central Jail. While serving his sentence, Singh played a role in assisting prison officials with warrant-related duties, which led to frequent communications with Khatoon, who was then the warrant in-charge.

Singh’s release occurred approximately four years ago, based on claims of good behaviour during his time in prison. After his release, the couple decided to transition their relationship from friendship to marriage, formally consolidating their bond.

The couple’s wedding took place on May 5 in Chhatarpur district, amid a backdrop of unique circumstances. Notably, Singh altered his name for the wedding invitations as a measure to mitigate potential societal backlash regarding their interfaith marriage.

The marriage was conducted with traditional Vedic rituals and chants, adhering to customs that are significant within Hindu marriage practices. Despite the couple’s desire for a celebratory occasion, the ceremony was reportedly not attended by Khatoon’s Muslim family members, who did not offer their support for the union due to its interfaith nature.

During the ceremony, the role of ‘kanyadaan’ was performed by Rajbahadur Mishra, the district vice-president of Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), who was accompanied by his wife.
