Molten Metal Spill at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant Results in Death of Eight Workers

A tragic accident at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant has led to the deaths of eight workers, with several others sustaining injuries. The incident occurred on June 8, 2026, during operations at the steel melting unit when a significant quantity of molten steel leaked from the SMS-2 and STC-3 facilities. Reports indicate that the spillage took place inside the steel melting facility, where workers nearby were affected, suffering severe burn injuries.

In the aftermath of the accident, emergency response teams were deployed to the site to carry out rescue and relief operations. Affected workers were quickly transported to nearby hospitals for immediate medical treatment. Senior officials have arrived at the scene to oversee the situation, with ongoing efforts to determine the cause of the molten metal leak.

Government Response and Financial Assistance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences regarding the tragic event at the steel plant. In a statement posted on X, he conveyed his sorrow over the loss of life and extended sympathies to the families of the deceased. “Saddened by the mishap at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. Praying that the injured recover at the earliest,” he stated.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister announced that the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) would provide an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased worker. For those injured in the incident, assistance of Rs 50,000 has been pledged. Local authorities are reportedly providing all necessary support to the families affected by this tragedy.

Reactions from Local Leaders

Former Chief Minister and YSRCP President Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy also expressed profound sadness over the incident. He shared his condolences with the bereaved families, emphasising the painful nature of such a significant loss of life in an industrial accident. Reddy called for strength and courage for the families during this difficult period and wished for a swift recovery of the injured workers.

Demanding a thorough inquiry into the incident, Jagan Mohan Reddy insisted that strict action should be taken against those found at fault. He highlighted the importance of adhering to safety protocols in industrial settings, stressing that there must be no compromises when it comes to worker safety.

In addition, Reddy instructed YSRCP leaders and party members in Visakhapatnam to provide comprehensive support to the victims and monitor their medical treatment. He assured that the party would stand by the affected families in this challenging time, reinforcing the need for ongoing support as investigations continue.
