In the 71st National Film Awards, veteran Malayalam cinema superstar Mohanlal was conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on Tuesday. This is the highest recognition award in Indian cinema and was conferred to Mohanlal this year by President Droupadi Murmu.

Short film on Mohanlal’s journey screened

As soon as Mohanlal’s name was announced and he went to the stage, audiences in the auditorium stood for a standing ovation. Present on this occasion were Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, and other stalwarts of the film fraternity.

During the award ceremony a short film made on Mohanlal’s life in cinema for over four decades was screened. This movie highlighted the journey of the superstar from his childhood years in Malayalam cinema to now India’s best actor.

Mohanlal paid tribute to industry’s legacy

Post accepting the award, actor Mohanlal shared a heartfelt message, he said, “As a representative of Malayalam cinema, I am humbled to be only the second recipient from the state to be honoured with this award. This is not my moment alone—it is a tribute to our industry’s legacy, creativity, and resilience.”

Before the ceremony, Mohanlal wrote on social media platform that this honour wasn’t his alone, it belonged to everyone from audiences, colleagues to well-wishers and family, “This honour is not mine alone, it belongs to every person who has walked alongside me on this journey. Your love, faith, and encouragement have been my greatest strength,”.

Mohanlal, 64, continues to win hearts with his performance even today, Information and Broadcasting Secretary Sanjay Jaju ended the evening on an emotional note, calling him ‘everyone’s Lalettan’ and also recalled many of his characters that have been alive in cinema lovers’ hearts.
