Mohammed Shami Acquitted in Cheque Bounce Case Filed by Wife Hasin Jahan

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has been acquitted of allegations related to a cheque bounce case initiated by his wife, Hasin Jahan. The ruling was issued by the Alipore Court, which determined that the evidence presented could not substantiate the claims against Shami. This decision comes after a lengthy legal process that has persisted for four years in the Alipore Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court.

The case trace backs to 2018 when Hasin Jahan alleged that Mohammed Shami had provided her with a cheque amounting to Rs 1 lakh for household expenses. After she deposited the cheque, it reportedly bounced, prompting her to take legal action. In addition to the cheque bounce case, Jahan had lodged several complaints against Shami and his family, citing various charges under penal provisions.

Shami’s Comments Following the Verdict

Following the court’s ruling on Wednesday, Mohammed Shami expressed his relief, stating that he had anticipated a favourable outcome. He remarked to reporters that he had confidence in the legal process, maintaining that he had not engaged in any wrongdoing and had fulfilled all financial obligations. Shami cited his commitment to manage various situations in life effectively, whether on or off the cricket field.

Currently participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Lucknow Super Giants, Shami has been a recurring figure in headlines due to a mix of personal and legal matters. He acknowledged the challenges he faced while navigating periods away from cricket, expressing a desire to continue striving for success in all aspects of life.

Ongoing Legal Disputes Between Shami and Hasin Jahan

Despite the acquittal in the cheque bounce matter, the legal disputes between Mohammed Shami and Hasin Jahan concerning maintenance and alimony remain unresolved. Under the directives of the Calcutta High Court, Shami is obligated to pay a monthly maintenance amount of Rs 1.5 lakh to Hasin Jahan and Rs 2.5 lakh for their daughter’s upbringing, totalling Rs 4 lakh each month.

Hasin Jahan has appealed to the Supreme Court, claiming that the current maintenance amount is inadequate for her family’s needs. The Supreme Court has issued notices to both Shami and the government of West Bengal regarding this dispute. Throughout the proceedings, the court has also raised concerns about the sufficiency of the Rs 4 lakh monthly maintenance for the essentials required by a mother and child.

Reports indicate that Hasin Jahan continues to reside at Mohammed Shami’s residence in Kolkata, frequently travelling between Delhi and Kolkata to facilitate their daughter’s education. In contrast, Shami primarily resides in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, except during his cricket commitments. While this ongoing maintenance dispute continues to unfold, Shami’s recent victory in the cheque bounce case represents a notable legal victory for the fast bowler.
