Guterres Urges World to Follow Gandhi’s Ideals to Resolve Conflict and Promote Peace

The CSR Journal Magazine

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged the international community to draw inspiration from the compassion and bravery exemplified by Mahatma Gandhi. He emphasised that Gandhi’s teachings hold renewed significance in the face of increasing division, tension, and conflict across the globe. During his message for the International Day of Non-Violence, which coincides with Gandhi’s birth anniversary on October 2, Guterres celebrated Gandhi’s enduring legacy and its applicability in tackling injustice and hardship.

Guterres made these remarks at a special event hosted by India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, where India’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, echoed similar sentiments. Parvathaneni noted that Gandhi’s principles continue to provide guidance on crucial issues such as inclusive development, climate change, self-sufficiency, and fostering peaceful coexistence. He linked these values to India’s bid for a UN Security Council seat for 2028-29.

On this day dedicated to non-violence, Guterres highlighted Gandhi’s commitment to effecting meaningful and enduring change whilst adhering to peaceful methods. He advocated for the use of dialogue and non-violent approaches as a means to confront injustice, urging people to build understanding and uphold human dignity to create lasting solutions.

Concerns Over Global Inequality and Instability Expressed

Guterres expressed concern regarding the rising division and strife, stating that poverty and inequality are widening the gap between the affluent and the underprivileged. He pointed out that the fundamental principles of peace and development, as outlined in the UN Charter, are increasingly being disregarded. Guterres’s statements painted a grim picture of a world characterised by conflict, where basic human rights and diplomatic dialogue are often overlooked.

He appealed for a collective effort to embody the courage, empathy, dignity, and shared humanity that Gandhi represented throughout his life. Guterres encouraged global leaders to engage in sincere dialogue and diplomacy to alleviate suffering and strive for a world committed to peaceful coexistence through non-violence.

At the event titled “Non-violence as a Means to Peace and Development,” Parvathaneni underscored Gandhi’s vision of Sarvodaya, which champions inclusive and equitable development. He noted that Gandhi’s awareness of environmental issues, demonstrated in his assertion that the Earth can meet every person’s needs but not their greed, remains highly relevant to contemporary climate challenges.

Gandhian Principles Offer Solutions For Modern Challenges

Ambassador Parvathaneni highlighted that Gandhi’s ideals of self-reliance equip societies to navigate the shocks of a rapidly changing world. His vision of an open society that embraces cultural influences while maintaining individual cultural identities provides insights on fostering harmony in increasingly diverse societies.

In light of current global issues—including armed conflict, climate crises, rising extremism, and deepening inequality—Parvathaneni posited that Gandhian principles of non-violence are crucial for conflict resolution, promoting social cohesion, and fostering environmental conservation, as well as strengthening global solidarity.

Parvathaneni also noted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tribute to Flydubai pilot Smit Machchar, commending him for his bravery in safely landing a plane under duress. This act was framed as an embodiment of the principle of Ahimsa, aligning with the day’s significance and Gandhi’s philosophies. He concluded by stating that the UN’s ongoing activities reflect Gandhian ideals of peace and development through non-violence.
