Massive Security Blanket for Bengal: 2,407 Central Force Companies to Guard First Phase

To ensure a peaceful and transparent polling process, the Election Commission has announced a rigorous security deployment for the first phase of the West Bengal elections, scheduled for * A staggering 2,407 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) will be stationed across the state to maintain law and order.

Following Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s earlier promise of a “leak-proof” security apparatus, the Commission released a detailed breakdown of the deployment. The first phase will cover 152 constituencies spanning North Bengal and several crucial districts in the southern belt.

Distribution of Central Forces

The security strategy places a heavy emphasis on sensitive zones, withMurshidabad receiving the highest concentration of forces. According to the Commission’s data, the distribution is as follows:

In the northern districts, *Cooch Behar* will see 146 companies, while *Malda* has been assigned 172 companies. *Jalpaiguri* will have 92 companies, *South Dinajpur* 83, and *Alipurduar* 77. *Raiganj Police District* is set to receive 71 companies, with *Darjeeling* and *Islampur Police District* each getting 61. *Siliguri Police Commissionerate* will be guarded by 44 companies, and *Kalimpong* will have 21.

In South Bengal and the western belt, the numbers remain high to ensure stability. *Murshidabad* leads with a total of 316 companies—divided into 240 for the Murshidabad Police District and 76 for Jangipur. *East Midnapore* will have 273 companies, while *West Midnapore* follows closely with 271. *Bankura* will see 193 companies, *Birbhum* 176, *Purulia* 151, and the *Asansol-Durgapur Commissionerate* 125. *Jhargram* has been allotted 74 companies.

Focus on Fear-Free Polling

The Election Commission has made it clear that no gaps will be tolerated in the security net. By deploying such a massive force, the authorities aim to prevent voter intimidation and ensure that the democratic process remains uninterrupted.

The first phase covers a vast geographical area, including the hills of Darjeeling, the plains of North Bengal, and the industrial and forest belts of the south. With the arrival of these forces, the state is bracing for one of its most heavily guarded electoral exercises in recent history.
