Mamata Banerjee Accuses BJP of Attacking Her Residence and Blames AIMIM for Malda Situation

The CSR Journal Magazine

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reportedly accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of targeting her home in Kolkata’s Kalighat. This accusation emerged following protests in Malda district, where seven Special Intensive Revision (SIR) officers were detained for over nine hours. During a campaign event in Bengal, Banerjee claimed that the alleged attack on her residence occurred a day after these protests. However, she has not provided specific details regarding the incident, and no confirmation has been issued by police officials.

The accusation marks a continuation of the ongoing tensions between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP. Just two weeks prior, Banerjee challenged the BJP during a rally in Kolkata, encouraging them to attack her residence and those of other party leaders, asserting that the TMC knows how to respond to such actions.

At the rally, Banerjee’s words were reported by news agency PTI, emphasising her readiness to resist any such attacks. This environment of accusation aligns with the current political landscape in West Bengal, which is already fraught with conflict ahead of upcoming elections.

Malda Incident and Blame on AIMIM

Banerjee has also laid blame on the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and the Indian Secular Front (ISF) in connection with the Malda protest that led to the gherao of judicial officers. She accused the Congress and the BJP of incitement, stating that the incident was orchestrated by multiple parties. Notably, the alleged mastermind behind the protests, advocate Mofakkarul Islam, was apprehended at Bagdogra airport while reportedly attempting to flee the state.

According to Banerjee, she believes that the BJP collaborated with AIMIM to orchestrate this unrest in Malda’s Mothabari area. During her comments, she described the involvement of the ISF and cited the instigation provided by both the Congress and the BJP as significant contributors to the situation.

Highlighting the political machinations, Banerjee challenged the integrity of the electoral process in West Bengal, questioning why the same voter lists could not be used for the upcoming assembly elections that were utilised in the 2024 general elections. She insinuated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had benefitted from discrepancies in voter lists during his previous victories.

Concerns Regarding Electoral Integrity

In her address, Banerjee raised concerns about the deployment of officers throughout the electoral process, alleging that transfers were being made to facilitate the movement of outsiders into West Bengal. She claimed that there are instances of cash being transported in Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) vehicles, asserting that she possesses records of these activities.

Further detailing her apprehensions, Banerjee remarked on the aggressive campaigning of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, stating that his prolonged presence in the state appears aimed at intimidating voters. She cautioned Shah that any attempt to garner votes through fear could backfire, urging voters to respond at the ballot box instead of resorting to violence.

The Chief Minister also expressed awareness of growing discontent over the SIR exercise, indicating that outsiders are allegedly being brought into the region to instigate unrest. She condemned the violence associated with the incident and assured the public that their concerns regarding voter eligibility would be addressed.
