Punjab Government Employees Stage Mass Leave Protest Over DA Arrears

Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal has voiced strong criticism against the Punjab government following a reported mass leave taken by government employees who are demanding the clearance of outstanding Dearness Allowance (DA) arrears. Badal indicated that over 300,000 employees participated in the protest by taking leave from their duties, asserting that the situation has led to embarrassment for the government and its offices.

In a statement shared via social media platform X, Badal remarked on the unprecedented scenes that unfolded in the Punjab Secretariat in Chandigarh, where he claimed the mass leave signified a serious issue facing the state’s governance. He labelled the government’s approach as shameful and suggested that no public relations efforts or media restrictions could adequately conceal the reality of the protest.

Badal’s comments included an animated hashtag, expressing his discontent with the Chief Minister and marking the protest as a significant event in Punjab’s political landscape. His tweets underscored a growing frustration among public sector workers regarding their unresolved pay issues, further exacerbated by a perceived lack of responsiveness from the state government.

Conversely, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann addressed the situation by emphasising the importance of dialogue, urging the protesting employees to cease their action. In his social media post, Mann stated that the government views its employees as an integral part of its community and is prepared to consider their legitimate concerns. However, he insisted that productive discussions could not happen alongside ongoing strikes.

Mann’s remarks underscored a commitment to resolving issues faced by government employees but made it clear that any dialogue would only be feasible if the protests were called off. This statement signifies a standoff between the government and its employees, who continue to demand swift action on their longstanding grievances.

As the protests intensified, the impact on public services became evident. Outpatient Department (OPD) services in state-run hospitals across Punjab experienced disruption, reflecting the widespread effects of the strike across different sectors. Narendra Singh, the President of Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Government Medical College in Amritsar, noted that the ongoing agitation had severely affected healthcare services during this critical time.

Singh further elaborated on the issues fueling discontent among staff, stating that workers had been voicing their concerns for the past four and a half years. Among their key demands are the regularisation of all contractual staff, the implementation of pension benefits for employees hired across various categories, the clearance of delayed Dearness Allowance payments, and the formalisation of roles for Anganwadi workers, helpers, and mid-day meal personnel.

He laid out the employees’ grievances verbally during an interaction with ANI, highlighting that government representatives had frequently postponed meeting dates despite employees’ requests for discussions. Singh noted that a substantial rally involving more than 300,000 workers took place on August 7 in Chandigarh, serving as a testament to the growing unrest among state employees.

Today, the situation escalated further with a complete strike observed throughout Punjab, as government employees staged protests across multiple levels, including block, district, and headquarters. The ongoing predicament reflects a significant escalation in the interactions between the Punjab government and its employees, as they seek resolution to their critical demands.
