China Warns Nepal of Flood Risk from Lhende River Lake Outburst

Nepal has been issued a warning regarding the likelihood of a significant flood in the Bhotekoshi River due to the formation of a lake upstream, following a blockage in the upper reaches of the Lhende River. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has advised residents in downstream areas to maintain a high level of vigilance and to “exercise necessary caution.”

In a notification released by the Flood Forecasting Division of Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, it was reported that information received from China through Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the obstruction where a severe flash flood had occurred the previous day. This blockage has led to the creation of a lake, which is reported to be increasing in size, raising concerns over a potential outburst.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has urged all individuals in lower areas of the Bhotekoshi River, including passengers and rescuers engaged in recovery efforts, to remain alert and avoid proximity to the river banks and other risky zones. “In light of this situation, until further notice, residents are strongly advised to stay in safe locations,” stated the department’s notice.

Following the issued warning, NDRRMA explained that the obstruction on the Lhende River is located approximately 18 kilometres upstream from the Rasuwagadhi border and that the resulting lake spans about 0.11 square kilometres. The authority reiterated the necessity for all parties in coastal regions to remain cautious due to the persistent risk of another major flood.

This alert comes on the heels of devastating floods that impacted the Bhotekoshi River region near the Nepal-China border at Rasuwagadhi, leading to catastrophic loss of life and serious damage to infrastructure and residences. According to reports from The Kathmandu Post, the death toll from the prior day’s flood had reached 359 by 5 PM local time on Thursday, with victims recovered from eight different districts in Nepal.

Police spokesperson Abi Narayan Kafle confirmed this revised figure to The Kathmandu Post, detailing the number of deceased in various areas: 17 in Rasuwa, 28 in Nuwakot, 33 in Dhading, 132 in Chitwan, 30 in Gorkha, 22 in Tanahun, 82 in Nawalparasi East, and 15 in Nawalparasi West. Rescue operations are ongoing, with both police and other security agencies conducting searches across the affected areas and evacuating families residing near places at risk of further flooding.

Authorities are collaborating with local officials and communities to search for individuals reported missing and to clear pathways obstructed by debris and flood damage. The recent floods have traversed through Rasuwa and other districts, moving downstream along the Trishuli and Narayani river systems, resulting in significant harm to various settlements, roadways, bridges, and other essential infrastructure.
