Mahindra to Launch XUV 3XO CNG Variant on October 15

The CSR Journal Magazine

Mahindra is scheduled to unveil the XUV 3XO CNG on October 15, expanding its compact SUV offerings with a new fuel option. This addition aims to cater to consumers looking for reduced running costs without opting for electric vehicles, while maintaining the practicality and features present in the existing lineup. The CNG variant will complement the petrol, diesel, and electric versions of the XUV 3XO, thereby enhancing Mahindra’s powertrain portfolio in a competitive market.

Engine Specifications and Performance Expectations

The forthcoming XUV 3XO CNG is likely to utilise a 1.2-litre turbocharged MPFi petrol engine, generating approximately 112bhp and 200Nm in its petrol form. It is anticipated that power and torque will be lower when operating on CNG; however, final specifications are yet to be confirmed. The chosen MPFi engine seems more suitable for adaptation to CNG than the higher-performing 1.2-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol variant, which could complicate installation due to its intricate fuel-injection system.

Mahindra is expected to provide a factory-fitted CNG system, but details concerning the engine output in CNG mode, fuel efficiency ratings, and available transmission options remain unannounced. The company has not disclosed which variants will feature the new powertrain.

One critical factor will be the arrangement for the CNG cylinder within the vehicle. The standard XUV 3XO has limited boot space, presenting a challenge for accommodating a traditional CNG cylinder without compromising luggage capacity. Mahindra may consider a dual-cylinder configuration, akin to options used by certain Tata models, to mitigate space issues. A modified packaging solution might also be explored, but specifics are still pending confirmation.

Current Powertrain Options in the XUV 3XO Lineup

The XUV 3XO currently comes equipped with petrol, diesel, and electric powertrain choices. The inclusion of a CNG variant will further diversify the options available to consumers, offering flexibility based on their driving needs and cost considerations. Presently, the petrol engine lineup features a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine that produces 109bhp, paired with a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

Additionally, there is a 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 115bhp, which can also be matched with a six-speed manual or a six-speed AMT. The most powerful petrol variant includes a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine delivering 129bhp, available in both manual and automatic transmission options. The electric version, known as the XUV 3XO EV, is equipped with a 39.4kWh battery pack, boasting an estimated range of up to 285km and an electric motor output of 150bhp and 310Nm, with a 0-100kmph acceleration time of 8.3 seconds.

The anticipated CNG variant is expected to resonate with private buyers seeking to lessen fuel expenses, particularly for those who drive regularly. Therefore, the new system offers a feasible alternative to petrol and diesel choices for consumers hesitant about transitioning to electric vehicles. This CNG option could also address urban mobility requirements depending on the variants and transmission choices offered by Mahindra.

Pricing and Details Ahead of Launch

Mahindra plans to introduce the XUV 3XO CNG on October 15. However, the company has not yet revealed key details such as the pricing, variant options, fuel efficiency, CNG tank capacity, or transmission configurations. These elements will be crucial in determining how effectively the new variant integrates into the existing XUV 3XO range and how it competes with other CNG-equipped vehicles in India.

The introduction of the CNG variant positions the XUV 3XO as a broader choice for buyers. Its ultimate market appeal will depend on Mahindra’s ability to balance factors such as fuel efficiency, performance, luggage capacity, and pricing in this new offering.
