The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) undertook a comprehensive inspection of 86 food establishments selling products through online delivery platforms on August 13. This initiative was aimed at ensuring compliance with food safety regulations across the State. The inspection revealed various issues, prompting immediate actions against several establishments, highlighting the FDA’s commitment to maintaining food safety standards.

During the inspection, one establishment was ordered to cease operations immediately due to non-compliance. In addition to halting operations, the FDA issued improvement notices to 60 establishments, emphasising the need for corrective measures to address identified deficiencies. This rigorous monitoring underscores the FDA’s proactive approach to securing consumer safety in an increasingly digital marketplace.

Licenses Suspended for Violations

The FDA suspended a total of 14 food business licenses with immediate effect during the inspection drive. This included five licenses related to Blinkit and Zepto, two concerning Instamart, seven attributed to Bhagwati Store, and one linked to Swinsta Ent Pvt. Limited. The official release from the FDA highlighted the critical nature of these suspensions, which were initiated to safeguard public health amidst growing concerns regarding food safety practices.

Furthermore, the inspection focused on dairy products, leading to the seizure of 698 kg of dairy stock valued at Rs 34,302. The FDA’s actions depict a broader effort to monitor the quality of food items and ensure compliance with established health standards. The implications of these inspections suggest a rigorous oversight protocol being enforced by the authorities to protect consumers from potentially harmful practices.

In addition, the FDA recorded a significant number of violations in the sale of banned food items, which included pan masala and gutkha. A total of 10 First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered, accompanied by the arrest of nine individuals involved in the illegal distribution of these products. Stock amounting to Rs 46,76,631 was confiscated in connection with these violations, illustrating the FDA’s determination to regulate contraband effectively.

Wider Impact of the Inspection Drive

As part of its comprehensive campaign, the FDA inspected 109 additional establishments, including hotels and restaurants. Of these, 49 received improvement notices, while four licenses were suspended as a consequence of non-compliance with food safety regulations. The FDA’s continuous efforts manifest in the issuance of these notices, as they work diligently to uphold the standards necessary for public consumption.

The total value of seized goods throughout the operation, which included various food items and banned substances, amounted to Rs 46,89,603. This sizeable figure underscores the scope of violations discovered during the inspections, further reinforcing the necessity of the FDA’s vigilant monitoring efforts. The authorities conducted 15 raids, signifying an extensive approach to enforcing compliance across the board.

On a related note, the FDA took swift action against four Domino’s Pizza outlets operated by Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd., suspending their licenses due to spotted food-safety and hygiene issues during inspections. These outlets are located in Vile Parle West, Borivali West, R-City Mall in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, and Malakapour in Karad, Satara. The movements reflect the FDA’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that all food outlets adhere strictly to safety and hygiene standards, safeguarding public health.
