Maharashtra FDA Suspends Licences of Five Domino’s Outlets in Pune and Kolhapur Due to Serious Hygiene Violations

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food licences of five Domino’s Pizza outlets in Pune and Kolhapur after inspections revealed significant food safety and hygiene violations. These inspections uncovered the presence of live cockroaches and dead cockroach remains in areas designated for food storage and preparation.

Earlier this week, FDA officials conducted inspections at over fifty Domino’s outlets throughout the Pune division. The inspections highlighted numerous irregularities concerning food preparation, handling, storage, and overall cleanliness. Among the issues identified were the lack of suitable equipment for managing both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items.

In addition to equipment deficiencies, inspectors noted incomplete temperature records and a general lack of cleanliness and sanitation. The findings also included improper storage practices, unpleasant odours in dining areas, and the absence of required identification documents for food distribution staff.

Specific Outlets Affected by Licence Suspension

The five Domino’s outlets affected by the licence suspensions are operated by Jubilant FoodWorks Limited, which manages the Domino’s brand in India. The locations facing action include two outlets in Pune—Warje and Hingne Khurd—along with Rajarampuri and A Ward in Kolhapur, and one outlet in Chakan, Pune district. The FDA ordered the suspensions on October 14 and 15, 2023, depending on the specific outlet.

Following the inspections, the FDA has emphasised the importance of maintaining high standards of food safety and hygiene in the food service industry. The department’s actions are aimed at safeguarding public health and ensuring that consumers have access to safe and hygienic food options.

The FDA’s inspection drive is part of a broader initiative to enhance food safety across Maharashtra. This ongoing campaign is being supervised by FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, who has prioritised the enforcement of food safety regulations in the state.

Wider Food Safety Crackdown Underway

The FDA has reported that its recent activities have led to the seizure of hundreds of kilograms of spoiled food. In addition to the licence suspensions, multiple establishments have been ordered to close due to violations of food safety standards. The department has also cancelled licences and issued notices to a range of food service entities, including canteens, five-star hotels, and upscale clubs.

This crackdown on food safety is intended to address the growing concerns regarding food hygiene and quality in the state. The FDA has committed to continuing its inspections of hotels, restaurants, food retail establishments, and online food delivery services. The initiative aims to ensure that citizens can access food that meets safety and hygiene standards.

As part of its efforts to improve food safety, the FDA is urging food service providers to adhere strictly to hygiene regulations and maintain proper food handling practices. The department’s ongoing inspections and enforcement actions are designed to foster a culture of compliance within the food service industry in Maharashtra.
