Petrol and Diesel Prices Remain Stable on October 19 Across Major Indian Cities

The CSR Journal Magazine

Petrol and diesel prices have shown stability today, October 19, across significant Indian cities, with no alterations reported by public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs). The pricing of fuel in India is influenced by various factors, including local taxes, freight costs, and regional economic conditions.

In New Delhi, petrol is being sold at Rs 102.12 per litre, while diesel is available at Rs 95.20 per litre. The capital city continues to offer comparatively lower fuel prices than other major metropolitan areas. In Mumbai, the financial hub of India, petrol costs Rs 111.21 per litre, and diesel is priced at Rs 97.83 per litre.

Chennai residents are paying Rs 107.76 per litre for petrol, with diesel priced at Rs 99.55 per litre. Kolkata’s fuel prices are higher, with petrol at Rs 113.51 per litre and diesel at Rs 99.82 per litre. In Bengaluru, petrol is currently retailing at Rs 111.68 per litre, while diesel costs Rs 99.56 per litre. Hyderabad has the highest fuel prices among these cities, with petrol at Rs 116.15 per litre and diesel at Rs 104.23 per litre.

Factors Influencing Fuel Pricing

The determination of fuel prices in India occurs daily at 6:00 AM by state-owned OMCs, including Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL). The final retail price that consumers encounter at the pump is based on a 15-day rolling average of international benchmark petrol and diesel prices, currency exchange rates, central excise duties, dealer commissions, and state-specific Value Added Tax (VAT).

Despite the fluctuations in international crude oil prices, which are affected by geopolitical events, OMCs have chosen to maintain domestic retail fuel rates. This stability comes amid ongoing global uncertainties that could impact future pricing strategies.

Recent developments in international oil markets have also played a role in shaping domestic fuel prices. For instance, oil prices experienced a decline following a decision by US President Donald Trump to waive sanctions and tariffs on Russian fuel exports. This decision is expected to influence global oil supply dynamics, which could have downstream effects on Indian fuel pricing.

Global Oil Market Developments

On Monday, oil prices saw a decrease, with Brent crude futures falling by $1.43, or 1.30%, to $108.43 a barrel. This decline follows a period of increased prices, as Brent had settled at its highest level since May 19 on the preceding Friday. West Texas Intermediate crude was recorded at $100.88 a barrel, down by 53 cents, or 0.52%.

Trump’s recent executive order, which waives significant sanctions and tariffs under the Graham Act, aims to facilitate increased Russian fuel exports to the United States. This move has been met with mixed reactions, as it is intended to ease fuel supply pressures but may also have implications for geopolitical relations, particularly concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has expressed concerns that these actions by the US could negatively impact Ukraine amidst its ongoing challenges. As the international oil market continues to evolve, the interplay between domestic pricing and global developments will remain a critical area of observation for consumers and policymakers alike.
