Hundreds of students from the Eklavya Adarsh Residential School in Jamli, located near Sendhwa in Barwani district, Madhya Pradesh, undertook a march to the district headquarters on August 24. The protest aimed to present their grievances directly to Collector Jayati Singh. The march commenced at approximately 7:30 am, covering a distance of around 15-16 kilometres.

The students expressed their intent to meet only with the Collector to discuss their issues. During their journey, they temporarily obstructed traffic on the Agra-Mumbai National Highway, sitting on the road and insisting that the Collector come to speak with them. Various administrative and police officials, including the SDM and Additional Collector, arrived at the scene in an attempt to convince the students to discontinue their march.

Despite interventions from officials, the students remained resolute in their plan to reach the Collector’s office. They indicated a sense of frustration regarding previously submitted complaints that had not received attention and claimed that their parents were being disrespected during interactions with school administration.

Details of the Students’ Grievances

Students articulated their concerns by highlighting that prior grievances had gone unaddressed. A representative student remarked, “We are from Eklavya Jamli and none of the demands we had raised earlier have been fulfilled.” The students mentioned that feedback forms submitted were reportedly discarded in their presence and described encounters where their parents were not treated with the necessary respect.

They underscored the urgency of meeting with the Collector, noting their desire to articulate their problems directly. Collector Jayati Singh acknowledged the meeting with students, confirming they discussed their issues in detail, including complaints about alleged discriminatory language used against them.

Furthermore, the students called for improved sports facilities at the school and expedited completion of an auditorium under construction. Singh stated that the children were involved in various activities like volleyball and dance, and their request for better facilities was recognised during the discussions.

Official Response and Actions Planned

In response to the grievances raised, Collector Jayati Singh indicated the formation of a committee that includes the SDM and SDOP to investigate the allegations and other issues cited by students. “We are looking into the matter, and a committee has been constituted. Once the investigation is complete, we will take actions as necessary according to the regulations,” she said.

She emphasised that the safety of the children was paramount, assuring the public that measures were being taken to prevent any potential issues during the protest or investigation process. The Collector mentioned that all concerns raised would be addressed appropriately, ensuring a thorough examination of the matters at hand.

This situation has brought light to the concerns of the Eklavya Adarsh Residential School students, prompting both administrative engagement and community awareness regarding educational grievances and students’ rights within the region.
