Over 200 Students Share Five Classrooms in Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur, Study Under Tin Sheds

The CSR Journal Magazine

In Sirmaur district, Himachal Pradesh, many students face significant challenges in accessing proper educational facilities. A recent report from the Paonta Sahib area reveals that students ranging from Class 6 to Class 10 are compelled to study under makeshift tin sheds. The adverse weather conditions frequently disrupt lessons, resulting in an inadequate learning environment.

Beheraywala High School accommodates approximately 100 senior students, with a total enrolment of about 200 to 250 pupils from pre-nursery through Class 10. Vikram Singh, the headmaster, noted that the school has requested assistance from the government to address its accommodation issues. According to Singh, students often have to sit on the ground during the rainy season, affecting their learning.

Singh elaborated on the situation, stating that the school currently lacks sufficient proper classrooms to serve its diverse student body. The headmaster reported that the local government had previously requested detailed information regarding the school’s infrastructure, which was submitted in July. However, no response has been received, leaving the institution to cope with insufficient space for effective teaching.

Combination of Classrooms Under Strain

The inadequate educational facilities have forced students in different grades to be taught in limited classroom spaces. This overlap complicates regular instruction, as varying educational levels attempt to coexist in a confined environment. The detrimental impact on learning is evident, as students struggle to focus between different subjects and teaching styles in shared spaces.

In addressing the capacity issues, the headmaster expressed concern for both senior and junior students, who are affected by the same infrastructural deficiencies. The reliance on makeshift arrangements raises questions about the quality of education being delivered, particularly when lessons are disrupted by weather or overcrowding.

Furthermore, the challenges faced by Beheraywala High School are not unique within the region. Other schools in Sirmaur are reportedly experiencing their own set of infrastructure-related difficulties, which compounds the education crisis in the area.

Lack of Teaching Staff Amplifies Issues

The educational challenges in Sirmaur district extend beyond infrastructure problems. Reena Kashyap, the Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Pachhad constituency, recently highlighted the alarming situation of teacher shortages. In the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, she reported that twelve schools within the Pachhad region are currently without any teaching staff.

This situation includes six schools in the Narag block, five in the Sarahan block, and one in the Rajgarh block, affecting approximately 40 to 50 students in each of these schools. Kashyap emphasised that the absence of teachers jeopardises the future of these children and their education.

In addition to the lack of teachers, there are also unfilled principal positions in several schools, which Kashyap indicated the government has promised to address. However, the urgency of the educational needs remains pressing, especially for students in the region who find themselves without qualified educators. This shortage complicates their ability to achieve basic educational outcomes.

The infrastructure challenges, coupled with staff shortages, illustrate a concerning gap in education within Sirmaur. The current conditions are significantly impacting how effectively students can learn and engage with their education, highlighting a need for immediate intervention and support from education authorities.
