Instagram Tests 90-Minute Horizontal Videos for Long-Form Content Creators

The CSR Journal Magazine

Instagram has initiated a trial of new features aimed at long-form content creators, including a 90-minute horizontal video format. This initiative, which began on Monday, focuses on engaging creators such as podcasters and comedians in the United States. The feature, referred to as “Features,” enables creators to link shorter video clips, typically lasting around three minutes, to their full-length videos. This development is intended to enhance user engagement by allowing viewers to seamlessly transition from a brief clip to the complete video.

Tessa Lyons, the vice-president of product at Instagram, explained that users will now have the option to click on a podcast clip they enjoy and continue watching the entire episode. This integration aims to provide a more comprehensive viewing experience, as creators will be able to connect their Reels to their full-length features.

The testing phase is currently limited to selected creators in the US, following previous trials in Brazil. Instagram plans to broaden this testing to tens of thousands of creators across the United States in the near future, allowing for a more extensive evaluation of the feature’s effectiveness.

Expansion to Television and Mobile Platforms

The newly introduced video feature will be accessible on mobile devices, with plans to extend the viewing experience to Instagram’s TV app. Instagram for TV, which launched last year and is compatible with platforms such as Samsung, Fire TV, and Google TV, is set to expand to Apple TV in the US. This move reflects Instagram’s commitment to enhancing the viewing experience for long-form horizontal content, particularly on larger screens.

Lyons emphasised that the optimal viewing experience for long-form content is on a larger, horizontal display, indicating that Instagram anticipates significant user engagement on these platforms over time. The integration of long-form videos into the TV app is expected to facilitate deeper consumption of content.

In addition to the video feature, Instagram is also exploring a new functionality called “Series.” This feature aims to provide a dedicated space for episodic Reels on a creator’s profile, catering to the rising popularity of microdramas and episodic video content among creators. The company began reaching out to microdrama studios in Southeast Asia in June to test this feature, and it has since contacted individual creators engaged in episodic content production.

Future Testing and Additional Features

Instagram plans to expand the testing of the Series feature to more countries in the upcoming months, with a targeted launch in the United States by the end of this year or early next year. Furthermore, the company is investigating how this feature will be presented on television, aiming to enhance cross-platform integration.

Other ongoing experiments include the integration of live videos into the Reels tab, which will be recommended to users who do not follow the creators. This particular test is currently being launched in Indonesia and Brazil, with plans for expansion to the US next year. These initiatives reflect Instagram’s ongoing efforts to adapt to the evolving landscape of content consumption and creator engagement.

As Instagram continues to innovate, the platform aims to provide creators with more tools to connect with their audiences effectively. The introduction of long-form video capabilities and episodic content features signifies a strategic shift towards catering to the needs of diverse content creators and their viewers.
