Lok Sabha Adjourned Until Noon Amid Opposition Protests

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Lok Sabha’s proceedings were interrupted and adjourned until 12 noon on Thursday due to disruptive slogans from opposition Members of Parliament. When Speaker Om Birla returned to the House, he was met with ongoing protests, prompting him to appeal for order during the Question Hour. Birla emphasized the importance of this segment of parliamentary proceedings, urging the INDIA bloc MPs to allow for a smooth session. He stated that the Question Hour is crucial for MPs to raise pertinent issues and hold the government accountable. The Speaker promised to convey his views on discussions from the preceding days once proceedings resumed.

Demands Surround LPG Shortage

Opposition MPs have been vocal about their demand for a discussion regarding the reported shortage of commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders across India, particularly amid the geopolitical tensions stemming from the conflict in West Asia. Earlier in the day, Congress leaders spearheaded by Rahul Gandhi protested within the Parliament complex, reiterating concerns over the nationwide LPG gas shortage, which has been exacerbated by recent global events. Reports indicate that this crisis has affected several states, prompting some restaurants in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, to switch to induction cooking methods due to unavailability of LPG.

Issues Surrounding Speaker’s Role

Speaker Om Birla resumed his responsibilities following the dismissal of a no-confidence motion against him, which was rejected by a voice vote. On the preceding day, the Lok Sabha experienced turbulent moments as Congress members protested comments made by Home Minister Amit Shah, directed at Rahul Gandhi. The Home Minister’s remarks were made during a two-day debate concerning a resolution introduced by Congress MP Mohammad Jawed. The session showcased a series of exchanges marked by an exchange of jibes between opposition and government members, reflecting heightened tensions between the two sides.

House Management Amid Protests

During the session, BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, who took over the chair, directed Mohammad Jawed to address the House after the Home Minister concluded his remarks. However, he insisted that Jawed could only proceed once Congress members returned to their seats. Amid the ongoing loud protests, Pal called for a voice vote on the resolution, which ultimately resulted in its defeat.
