Lai Ching-te Warns of China’s Threat to Democracy, Calls for Unity on National Security

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Taiwanese President has expressed alarm regarding the potential erosion of sovereignty and democratic freedoms due to engagement with authoritarian regimes such as China. These comments were made ahead of an anticipated meeting between the President of China and a prominent figure from Taiwan’s Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), according to The Taipei Times.

In a social media post, the President underscored China’s increasing reliance on so-called “grey zone” strategies and military intimidation in the Taiwan Strait. He cautioned that such tactics pose a significant risk to regional stability, calling attention to the contrasting nature of Taiwan’s democratic framework against authoritarian governance.

The President reiterated that Taiwan plays a crucial role as a bastion of freedom in Asia. He stressed the importance of the Taiwan Relations Act, especially on its 47th anniversary, as well as the Six Assurances, both of which are pivotal in shaping the relationship between the United States and Taiwan.

Importance of US-Taiwan Relations and Democratic Values

According to the Taiwanese leader, the partnership with the United States is deeply rooted in shared values, emphasising democracy and human rights. He noted that this alliance is essential for maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Moreover, the President highlighted that support for Taiwan in the United States enjoys bipartisan backing, reinforcing the significance of safeguarding Taiwan as a bulwark against authoritarianism globally. He argued that the defence of Taiwan is essential for the protection of democratic ideals worldwide, further solidifying the island’s strategic importance along the First Island Chain.

In light of ongoing tensions, the Taiwanese leader insisted that true peace stems from strength, which necessitates continual investment in defence. Taiwan has already increased its defence budget to over 3 per cent of its GDP and has plans to elevate it to 5 per cent by the year 2030.

Concerns Over Defence Budget and Political Unity

The President called attention to a proposed defence package worth $40 billion aimed at developing a comprehensive air defence system. This initiative was noted in The Taipei Times as a vital step towards bolstering Taiwan’s military preparedness.

However, the President voiced criticism towards opposition lawmakers for their delays in legislating this proposal. He warned that such setbacks could weaken Taiwan’s defences and erode international confidence in the island’s commitment to its national security.

In his call for unity among political factions, the President urged all parties to prioritise national security efforts. He emphasised the necessity for a collective demonstration of Taiwan’s determination to uphold its democratic system in the face of external pressures.
