Kolkata Cop Brings Durga Puja Joy to Street Dwellers

The CSR Journal Magazine

While the city prepares for Durga Puja with dazzling lights and elaborate pandals, one Kolkata Police officer is ensuring the festive spirit reaches those living on the margins. Assistant Sub-Inspector Bapan Das has once again dedicated his personal resources to bring the joy of new clothes to underprivileged mothers and children residing on pavements across Central Kolkata.

For many living on the city’s streets, the grand festival often passes by unnoticed, devoid of the customary new attire and fanfare. ASI Das, however, is determined to bridge that gap and exemplify the true meaning of compassion during the season.

New Clothes Ignite Smiles Among Children

On Saturday, Das distributed new clothes and essential items to 35 mothers and children along major thoroughfares including MG Road, Bowbazar, and Amherst Street.

The impact of the gesture was immediately visible in the recipients’ excitement. One child, Riya, was seen happily twirling in her new jeans and top, while Gouri beamed as she clutched a dress and a new pair of shoes. Another recipient, Putul, expressed her relief while holding a new sari, saying softly, “All my clothes got drenched in the rain; this gift from police uncle makes me so happy.”

Eight Years of Quiet Service

For ASI Bapan Das, who is attached to the Special Branch and also serves as a guard for MP Saugata Roy, this act is part of a long-standing commitment to social welfare. For the past eight years, he has quietly supported the underprivileged by:

* Arranging blood for patients in need.
* Donating from his own salary to support various causes.
* Distributing warm clothing during the harsh winter months.

This year’s focus on mothers was particularly intentional. “Maa is coming home, so today’s gifts are for these mothers too,” Das stated, connecting his act of charity directly to the essence of the Goddess Durga’s return.

Hailing Hope in Uniform

Hailing from North Bengal, Das has cultivated a reputation as a figure of kindness and hope among the city’s poor. His initiative, often carried out under the banner of drives like “Bhalobasha Bazar” (Market of Love), offers much-needed support to those who feel they have nowhere else to turn.

At a time when public trust in law enforcement is often fragile, ASI Bapan Das’s unwavering dedication to service reminds the community that the true spirit of Durga Puja lies in compassion and social responsibility. His work serves as a powerful example of reaching out to those who need the festive cheer the most.
